The diaper bag approach

I just started with a therapist who specializes in WLS patients. She suggested taking the "diaper bag" approach. You know how every parent has a diaper bag full of things to help soothe a fussy infant/toddler? In every diaper bag I have carried, you had a little toy, fresh supplies for accidents, baby lotion, maybe some baby tylenol. She suggested getting together a similar kind of soothing kit for me to have for whenever I am not feeling "right" - for times when I would normally have turned to food for comfort. She suggested that I gather 10 things that I can put in my bag that would provide some sort of comfort and/or distraction. So I am in the process of trying to assemble that. So far I have some very good smelling hand lotion; I plan to add some sugar-free mints, a little knitting project that is easily picked up and put down (like a dish cloth), a small book of affirming quotes or meditation book. I am searching around for other ideas, so feel free to comment if you can think of any.

That is a great idea!  Maybe an ipod/earbuds with soothing music (or meditation)  and a pair of shoes for walking.  Just walking can calm a not "right" moment or day.  Or some protein snacks ( single serve nuts, protein powder) Items for a simple manicure (clippers, file, polish).

Wow!  Super idea!  Thanks for sharing.

How about favorite photos?  For me, I would have headphones/earbuds to plug into my phone to listen to my favorite music.  I'm also a big meditator.  How about an eye pillow?  They are stuffed with herbs and very soothing.

I like puzzles especially sudoku.

Sugar free gum...my latest fav is rootbeer from the 'desserts' line...and I don't even like the drink or candy rootbeer.

Nail polish in a pretty soft pastel color.  Taking Biotin makes my nails grow faster.

This is a fantastic idea! I will definitely be making myself a bag! Thanks for sharing!

I will probably include music, journal, high protein snacks, a book, pictures of me at my heaviest and pictures of my family as a reminder for why I am working so hard.

What a great idea! I would add a little spiral notepad (the pretty little decorative ones) that I use to write down quotations, definitions of words, things to do that are special, etc. Also a few pretty, but small, rocks or gems. A measuring tape (like for sewing) that has marks on it showing inches lost in the waist area over time.
