Always cold!!

Hi Gang,

Weird question- I have read that constant coldness (i.e. feeling cold) is a side effect of bypass.

How long does it take to go away?  Does it go away.

I am always cold. Hands and feet are like ice but that is tolerable. What I cant STAND is the feeling of coldness around my shoulders and legs!!

I am using an electric throw, a sweater AND a shirt.

DOes this go away? I am 11 months out

Can't wait to hear the answer to this. I am only 3 weeks out but I am freezing ALL THE TIME! Even under several blankets and nearby the heater, just can't seem to warm up! Toes always feel like ice cubes. I thought it would go away once I started eating solid foods.

Nope.  I was cold right after surgery...Moderately cold all summer (nothing that an indoor sweater couldnt fix..I thought we just had the AC jacked up too high at work)...but now...I am honestly freezing. And I saw this as a gal that grew up in Northern MN and would ice fish at -20 to -40 F (I would also walk the trap lines in these temps too..nothing that a snow suit couldnt handle). Now it is 44 outside and I am under an electric throw and still freezing.

The only thing that helped me at night for bed was a huge electric blanket turned up to the temperatures of hell, sweatpants, teeshirt AND a sweat shirt.

I hate being cold!  I used to hate being hot and sweaty when fat...but now..I actually kind of miss it (the hot sweaty...not the fat).

I'm almost 2 years out and I'm always cold . . . only since surgery.  I don't think it has gotten much better.  I live in Florida, so I'll survive!

You lost a lot of insulation that disappeared with the weight. I got cold at first but had lost a little too much weight - down from 290 to 175. I leveled out at a more comfortable 200 for 10 years. And yes, the coldness went away when I had leveled off.  But I also think that some people just get cold even without having had weight loss surgery. They just have different metabolisms than others. I'm sure your metabolism will get back to normal. Just give it some time.

My hands and feet were almost always cold before surgery. Now that I'm about 7 months out, it hasn't gotten any better. I keep fingerless gloves and sweaters in the office, and always seem to clutching a mug of hot tea :(
