Coffee?

On the post "what's on your Wednesday menu?" I saw a lot of people post that they started their day with coffee.  I was told no coffee ever again! Was I told wrong or are all of you drinking decaffeinated?

I was told to be cautious about coffee at first because it is a diuretic, but never to NOT drink it.  I have often added instant coffee to hot chocolate and there are coffee-flavored protein powders, so I think it's one of those personal preference questions.

I have found to my dismay that my friend's freshly ground special beans can cause some terrific toilet problems, so just be sure to do that close to home.

I think it depends on your surgery team. I did my pre-op visits at a smaller facility where I was told to give up coffee completely. When I met with my surgical team at the bigger facility they told me up to 3 cups of caffeinated coffee a day is perfectly fine. I would personally suggest following your surgical teams advice as it seems they all have different "rules."

Every surgeon is different. Mine allows 14 ounces of caffeinated beverages per day,so after my first cup any others are decaffinated.

I was told coffee is fine. The only restriction I have is that I have to wait until I am meeting my fluid minimums after surgery before I can add it back to my diet. Of course I can't add cream or sweeteners with calories. I would ask what their reason is. Forever is a really long time.

My plan was decaf before surgery and about 3 mos after. I ENJOY my coffee, have since I was very young. It's one of life's great pleasures!!   I have a cup (or 2) in the am with my protein shake  and maybe one late afternoon.

I was served coffee in the hospital the day after my surgery and I have been drinking it every day since.  I drink decaf because I get jittery with too much caffeine.  The "coffee is a diuretic" has been proven false.  You would have to drink caffeinated coffee by the gallons to have a diuretic effect.

I drink tons of it with no ill effects. My surgeon said it can increase cravings and to only drink decaf, but this is one of the rules I do not follow. No straws and no gum are 2 other rules I ignore.
