Hey All! Sorry for spamming the page so much recently. I feel like I've posted a lot the past week. It's just because my surgery is so close and I'm scared/excited. :)

anyway, quick question what's the best form of Iron to take post-op? I bought 18mg dissolvable Carbonyl Iron. Is this a good choice? Or is there a better option?

yes - a lot of people on here take carbonyl iron. It's well-absorbed and is easy on most people's stomachs (unlike some of the other forms of iron...)

Carbonyl was what I always used until I started using the Patch.

Anything with ferrous in the ingredient list (usually ferrous sulfate) is going to be very constipating.

Heme iron is probably the best absorbed, but is very pricey.

Proferrin, which is Heme iron.

I have always used Ferro Sequels that is easy on the stomach and now includes vitamin C, that helps with absorbing. I also take a prenatal vitamin. I take them separate 2 hours apart minimum along with calcium separate! Vitamins all day long!

My Surgeon told me that post-operatively iron is not very well absorbed for the first six weeks as your body is healing.

He likes ferramax but has approved the patches if I want to order them to avoid constipation issues and the irritation they were causing post-op.

I found the capsules got stuck or made it through my system whole. When I opened them I did not like the black staining if my tongue and teeth.

I found the powder to have a very strong metallic taste - so I donated that one to my daughter, who like me is anemic (she says it is okay in orange juice - which we can not have due to the acidity).

Feramax is in a capsule and those of us who had RNY do not break down that capsule so its a waste of our time and money unless people are willing to open them up and drink the iron in a liquid like you said) which I tried and its just gross! I then witched to Proferrin Iron, its a Heme iron which is the best one, got it at Walmart. When I found out hat my iron was extremely low I had 3 Iron infusions and now use the Iron patch. I would go for the patch, we woman just have such a hard time absorbing iron, especially if you are still menstruating and I am and I struggle to keep my iron at a good level now.
