Do you NEED someone with you at the hospital?

My surgeon said I would probably be in the hospital for 2 nights as long as everything went well.

Normally my huband would be there with me, but we have no one to stay with my toddler.

We are thinking he can drop me off at the hospital in the morning, then they can come visit me in the evenings. That way he can take a couple of days off work once I get home.

I think I will be ok not having anyone waiting for me once I get out of surgery, just wanting to know if anyone else did it mainly on their own and if they have any tips!

I didn't have anyone stay with me at the hospital. It was easy!
I've heard from a lot of people that they don't really want anyone there.

I was wondering about this also.    I live alone, no close freinds ... i know that first week especially will be hard in and outside of hospital.  is being alone during this (or any) stage something to be avoided?  Also, assuming you are in hospital for 2 days and everything seems ok ... would it be advisable to drive yourself home after?  for me it's about 1-1h30 drive (100kms)

I wasn't allowed to drive myself home nor would I have wanted
too.  This is something you need to check out in advance.

i don't believe hospitals are allowed to let you leave without having someone to drive you. technically you shouldn't drive for 2 days after being under anesthesia (sp?).

Pete,
You should ask your doctor. I would not think that driving yourself home would be advisable. I also think it would be good to have someone available in the first 2 or 3 days at home. You are having major surgery. There are life threatening things, although not likely, that could happen. You are having anesthesia and an invasive procedure. You will be on pain meds and will need to stay hydrated. If you had a reaction to medication or symptoms of a leak would you need someone with you?

The hospital will not release you if you do not have anyone to take you home. It is a safety issue as you will still be coming off heavy painmeds. However staying alone in the hospital is not an issue as that is what the nursing staff is there for.

I had a one night stay - the most miserable night of my life. I'm glad my husband wasn't there. He came the next day and hung out while I had my leak test and helped me walk around.

Once I got home and slept in my own bed the next night I could handle beign home alone, even with the dogs (which really just needed to be let out into the yard). If you get up and walk ASAP after surgery being home alone shouldn't be an ordeal. I mostly napped.

While I was in, my husband came to visit for a couple of hours but went home every day. The nurses are there to help you so I didn't need my husband until I was released.
