SPLENDA

I realized today why my belly is do "talkative" and grumbly.  It hasppened to me a few years back when I worked in SC and traveled up to NC every other 4 day weekend to visit family and would ear half a bag of the SF sugar wafers.  It's the Splenda.  And we know that everything we have right now at this stage is made with Splenda.  I am 6 days out and my mouth has horrible aftertaste that even makes the water taste yukky.  I do have some Stevia for some stuff but what about what we can have that is SF?  I know that I am not the only one that has this problem.  Has anyone found a good alternative to Splenda that does not cause such a reaction?  I am even going to dig out my old tupperware popsicle maker and make some KoolAid with Stevia and try that.  After that I am at a loss.

Does aspartame cause you grief too?

Then I guess the easiest solution would be to go for products made with aspartame instead of sucralose.  Or to just avoid SF stuff in general.

When the label says "contains Splenda" that is usually just that it contains some Splenda but the main sweetener will be a sugar alcohol like sorbitol or maltitol or some other thing ending in tol that will tear up your insides.  Check the label.

Listen to WhiteDove. (Above)

The sugar alcohols can really be tough on the tummy.

My NUT suggested coconut crystals? I also had a sugar-free reaction after too much Splenda/Crystal Light, etc., in the second/third month. It caused gas, bloating, irritable bowel for me. My NUT also suggested agave liquid (in small amounts) instead of substitutes. I haven't tried either - I did buy organic stevia, though, but dislike it. Haven't found a good replacement. I just cut down on the sugar-free altogether. Not easy, but...

The reason things taste "yukky" may be because the surgery often has the effect of changing your perceptions of the smell and taste of food. I had that bad -- everything smelled and tasted weird. And I know all about that horrible aftertaste. The good news is that the effect wears off after a while. I'm 6 weeks post-op and food is finally starting to smell and taste like it should. Welcome back, coffee!

Sugar free is the one bad thing about being WLS. I've always been able to taste it - never been able to touch diet soda, even the zero stuff tastes odd. It only got worse after surgery. I don't much like it, but splenda tastes less bad than the others for me. They all cut up my stomach in the end(see what I did there ). So I'm  trying to do without (except for coffee), or when I can't, tolerating stevia or the least amount of sugar possible.

I'll have to check out the coconut granules.
