BBQ Sauce

Has anyone had any success in finding a good BBQ sauce that is sugar free or low sugar? I am open to either commercially prepared or recipes to be made at home. I just spent some time reading labels of different sauces and it's eye opening that most of the commercial sauces have 14 grams of sugar per 2 TBS serving. Sure, only 60 calories, but 56 of them are from pure, refined sugar, which is simply not acceptable to me.

Having a craving for BBQ. Can you tell?

So here's my recipe for bbq sauce -- https://mangeratrois.net/index.php/recipes/sauces-and-spice- blends/1460-basic-barbecue-sauce

I have made it with tomato paste instead of ketchup with no problem, which removes some of the sugar.  And you could easily swap out the brown sugar for your sugar free sweetener of choice.

Stubbs spicy BBQ sauce only has 6g carbs (4g sugar) per 2tbsp. I've used it with chicken cooked in the crock pot and liked it, but I don't like 'sweet' BBQ sauces so if that's what you're looking for it might not work. I haven't tried the other flavors, some have more sugar than the Spicy.

Thanks! I love spicy and do not like sweet BBQ sauce. I will look for Stubbs. It's a name I don't recognize.

Hey Kairk,

I've tried several times with only OK results and really need to get back on it.

I was in Austin Texas recently and had BBQ twice, always trying to figure out a baseline flavor profile.

BBQ sauce is a tough one, in general it's way to much sugar and used to heavy.

That's my California/kindergarten evaluation of classic Texas BBQ.

To me good BBQ doesn't need sauce or very little as most tends to hide that great low and slow smokey goodness. A good dry rub is all it needs!

My favorite is a good seasoned pulled pork soaked in it's own juices. Most pulled pork is swimming in sugar sauce that hides the meat flavor.

That said, BBQ sauce as a light condiment can be really good and keeps the sugar consumption down.

One thing I have had on my mind and not yet tried is to add vinegar to a bottled classic BBQ sauce to cut the sugar and create a hybrid Carolina vinegar based sauce as vinegar has nothing in it.

I was just about to suggest a Carolina sauce :) You may also want to keep an eye out for mustard-based BBQ sauce instead!

I haven't tried it but have heard great things about the Tessamae brand. I think they're Paleo-focused, but that means no sugar, right?

I can reiterate the Stubb's recommendation. That's good stuff.  His wing sauce is also low sugar and VERY good.

The absolute BEST sugar free BBQ sauce I have tried is G Hughes Smokehouse Sugar Free Hickory BBQ Sauce.  For 2 Tbsp it has only 10 calories & 2g Net Carbs.  My husband who only likes 'real' BBQ sauce CANNOT tell the difference.  It is awesome....REALLY!!  I get it at my local grocery store for about $3-$4...but you can also order through Walmart.com for $2.72.  Give it a try....not sickly sweet....you will NOT be disappointed.
