How long was your process before actually having the surgery?

Hi guys,

I've been researching WLS for a few years now and I think I am ready to take the plunge. I signed up for a WL seminar the surgeon's office has in a couple weeks (did this 3 years ago but figure I need a refresher). So, from the time you started the process, how long before you actually had the surgery? I know different surgeon offices will vary but I am just curious about your experiences... Thanks.

I started my process last December and had my surgery in late August of this year. Was almost 9 months, but worth the wait!

From the day I got my insurance approval to the day of my surgery was about 1.5 weeks. I had to do 3 months of supervised weight loss before the insurance would approve (but I actually did 7 because I was scared to commit to the surgery.)

From first seminar (which my PCP made me take) to surgery was under 4 months. My first meeting with my bariatric center and surgeon was on Sept. 9 and I had surgery on December 7. Had to lose about 10% of my body weight prior to scheduling surgery. Got that done in 8 weeks. Surgery was booked about 4 weeks after that.

I think it depends on your insurance company.  Mine took right at 7 months.

Good luck !

I went to my initial WL seminary in mid January, and had my surgery on May 1, and that included a 3 month pre-surgery diet mandated by my insurance!  Part of my quick schedule was luck.  Part was determination.  At the initial seminar, the doctor said there was still one appointment available that week.  I called first thing in the morning and got it.  I was diligent in following the NP's and NUT's advice, so they helped move me thru.  And then I lucked out and there was a cancellation on May 1. I finished the pre-op diet on April 19, they immediately submitted the paperwork to insurance, and insurance approved it in just a couple days.  And the rest is history!

You should ask at the seminar what the average time is between starting and surgery.  They probably can give you a good estimate.

Best of luck.  I hope you the best success.
