Normal to gain weight immediately after surgery?

Surgery was Monday the 10th. I was 230.5 that morning. I weighed myself today and was 240. Is that normal? Caloric intake is less than 500 per day. Sugars are minimal. Protein around 80 per day.

Is it just too early for me to worry? I just want to be successful! Thanks!

Yes. you will be very swollen and pumped full of fluids.

If you fall down you just have to get back up.

My nurse walked me to the scale before surgery. After surgery on my first walk we went back to the scale and it was 19 pounds heavier.

The surgeon just laughed and told me to pee it out.

It was gone in a few days and I had lost some weight by one week.

Totally normal. This is due to the fluids they pump you with and the swelling from surgery. I made a promise to myself not to weigh for two weeks post-op because of this. I made it one week :)

Definitely normal. Your body is full of fluids, swollen and in healing mode. It will go away and you will lose.

I would suggest not weighing yourself again until you hit the one month mark from surgery. With the extra fluids plus the extremely common "3rd week stall" (which isn't really a stall, it's your body trying to figure out what's going on) you will make yourself crazy checking and not seeing consistent number drops. Work on getting in that liquid protein, sipping fluids and walking and stay off the scale for a while. Good luck. Heal well.

It's normal. I had a large gain too from my weight right before surgery to when I just returned home to weigh myself. It's fluids, and it takes a while for you to get back to that pre surgery weight.

Its very disheartening!

But you are on the long term path to weight loss. You have decided to remove most of your stomach, permanently. So focus on the fact that you will lose weight. It will happen. It will be with stalls and quick drops, through focus, through good choices on a consistent basis, but the very first week, try not to look at the scale too much, as you will feel frustrated at all that gain from the hospital.

Oh, and walking helps the kidneys to flush out all that fluid, so if you feel up to it, walk!

I was 7# heavier the day after surgery due to IV fluids. I was below my surgery weight by the third day.
