Sugar..Sugar..Post Op
posted on 8/21/12 9:00 am
Hello all,

Someone sent me a message reading sugar cravings post op.

I will say it is still and addiction of mine that I am trying work to actively control.   When I see it, I want it. And, sometime I get it.

I drink Quik Trip’s Sugar Free Peach Tea as a way to get my sugar taste. Other than that I don’t drink or eat sugar for the most. I have found that once you find a “good” food/ drink that can help you overcome your craving have at it. I drink Quik Trip tea almost daily. It’s a .30 or so where I live. I saw that this addiction was getting costly so I started purchasing Crystal Light Diet Peach tea, Walmart Diet Peach Tea and other brands. So, I get my sugar in and a little variety to.

Sugar free candy is not for me. I have found that I cannot exercise control when I have a whole bag of sugar free candy and the rules of the game so to speak is sugar free is okay for folks with surgery.   I found that I would eat the whole bag. I do it each and every time I pick up a bag of sugar free candy. And then comes the …..stomach pains from the sugar alchol. So, no sugar free candy for me.

Another comment about sugar….  When you have not had it in a long time and you get the “real stuff” like cookies, or regular tea, or a snack cakes, etc., it tastes really sweet. I try not to go there too often because I have observed that I get will get on a sugar kick and I want it all the time. And, this I don’t want.   I will also say I try my best to exercise self-control but I don’t always ways win the battle.

Here are two instances.

When visiting a family member, she had chocolate sandwhich on a table. The cookies were calling my name. I ate 6 cookies. I will never forget. The cookies went do great. I had not issues. And, then…about ½ hour later I was in pain and I promised I would not do it again. I have had a cookie here and there before but I have not dumped or had any pains. I think I just had too many.   I hated my kids seeing me in pain and not being able to function. I forced myself to go to sleep because for me when I have too much sugar my stomach hurts, I can’t function and the process lasts about two hours. I hate not being able to function.

My current battle with sugar is the cinnamon candy on my boss’s desk. I have admitted that I am the “Cinnamon Candy Monster”. I have tested my body and I know that I can have up to five daily or in one sitting with no impact on my body. No good J So, I have done things like not visit my boss but the candy still calls my name. My new strategy is to carry my tea in her office and have something to drink so that I am not reaching for the candy.

Good luck on your journey of managing your sugar intake!!! It is a battle that I have and will continue to have and I will WIN!

Have a great day!
