Surgeon TestimonialJoseph JohnsonI first met him in June 2008, at his seminar. He explained things so that all people who attended could and did understand. He also took time to answer everyone's questions.
Second time was on Dec. 1, when I had my surgeon's consultation. He put me at ease, and took the time, once again, to answer my questions, and address the concerns I had about the burn scar on my stomach (from drinking hot coffee as a baby at 18 months old).
Then the big day came; the day of surgery. He again put me at ease, and explained how things would happen, including surgery happening 45 minutes earlier than scheduled.
On the evening of March 3, he popped in to check up on me in my hospital room. He apologized to me that he didn't see me the evening of surgery, which was due to some minor glitches coming up in recovery. This reinforced the feeling I had that his bedside manner is excellent.
Overall, I would give him the highest marks I could. The staff at Highland Hospital are top-notch, from the receptionists to the surgeons. One of the dieticians even came up to see me in my room and give me the diet I would leave the hospital on.

Had my nutritionist follow-up this afternoon.
I shouldn't have been surprised by this, but I was: the inevitable weigh-in. Wasn't sure she would do it. I now weigh 255 pounds, down 5 pounds from last month.
Then, after discussing my food journals, we came to the conclusion as to why I may have regained weight. She told me I had not been getting in enough dairy, fruits, and vegetables. We then discussed ways to work those into my current meal plans, even coming up with some sample meals.
All in all, a good appointment. She wants me to go back on June 4 to follow up again.

March 5, 2013 - 4 years post-op on March 5, 2013 6:11 pm
4 years ago this past Saturday (March 2, 2009), I had RNY gastric bypass surgery.
I don't regret for one single minute doing it.
I am struggling with a bit of weight regain, however. The bariatric center says I am now 260 pounds. That is up 8 pounds from last year, which was, in turn, up 7 pounds from 2011.
I am being proactive about it, because I want to stop the weight gain, and initiate more weight loss. I am going to exercise more, avoid my trigger foods (snacks and sweets), keep a closer eye on my portions, start keeping a food journal using the SparkPeople app for Android, and I even have an appointment for next month with a different nutritionist at my bariatric center (my original one no longer sees patients, since she was promoted to the coordinator of the Bariatric Center).
Maybe keeping updates on here will also help get me back on track.
For my first day of using SparkPeople Diet and Food Tracker, it says I took in 1341 calories today. My bariatric center recommends we stay between 1000 and 1500 calories a day. So 1341 isn't too bad.

March 3, 2011 - 2 years post-op on March 3, 2011 7:46 pm
Its been a while, and time for an update.
I had my 2 year post-op checkup today. The PA I see at my bariatric center seemed genuinely happy to see me, and the progress I have made.
I weighed in at 240 pounds today, which is still exactly 100 pounds less than my weight during the pre-op testing.
She did encourage me to get out and exercise one or two more times a week than I currently do.
And, I think I convinced 2 people in the waiting room to attend the hospital's support group!
One more change is in the support groups. I still go to two distinct support groups, 3 times a week. I got involved in helping run the group at my hospital, too. We have a speaker, usually, then divide into 3 groups (pre-op to 6 months, post, over 6 months post), and lap-band patients. I lead the pre-op discussion group. I feel the need to give back the help and support I got along the way.

March 2, 2010 - One year out!! on March 5, 2010 4:12 am
Well, I made it!! FINALLY a year out!!! Well, a few days past that now.
I took this whole week off from work, as my own personal holiday week.
I had my yearly follow-up at the bariatric center March 2, on my 1 year surgiversary. I got weighed in, and I now weigh 243 pounds (with clothes on!). Not bad! I'm almost one hundred pounds down!
Now, I'm just waiting for the results of my bloodwork, to see if I am deficient on anything.
Also, at one year out, the PA wants me to get a bone density test done, through my primary doctor. I hope there isn'tanything to worry about, there, too.

September 14, 2009 - 6 month post-op check-up! on September 14, 2009 4:07 pm
Today, I had my 6 month post-op checkup. I saw the PA today. She said I was doing great, and was happy with my weight loss and progress thus far.
I now weigh 255 pounds, down 85 from my Valentines Day pre-op testing.
I am now walking more, especially at lunchtime at work. I even have rollerblades to learn how to use!
