Surgeon Testimonial

Voravit Wongsa M.D.
I know of several people that have used Dr. Wongsa and have researched him and felt total comfort in his abilities. I was somewhat nervous because others stated he is "to the point", period. In my opion he was very knowledgable and answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. UPDATE: I had my surgery on 2/21 and I can say that Dr. Wongsa was super and his bed side manners were great. Dee (his nurse) assisted him with surgery and followed up with me after. She is so sweet and was extremely professional. DR. WONGSA AND HIS STAFF DESEREVE 5 STARS ~~ THEY ARE AWESOME!~ I haven't experienced an negatives yet, but will be sure to update if I do ~~

3 day LPT
on June 14, 2008 5:05 pm
I got this 3 day liquid protein test off of Denise from CA profile after reading about it on the Main Board.  As I struggle to reign in the carb monster I'm considering a plan like this.  I've done the 5 day pouch test several times, with much success (www.5daypouchtest.com).

There are some that don't agree with these type of programs, however, it's what works for the individual IMO.  We all have our struggles, whatever it may be and if it works then so be it.  I'm not of the mind-set that I'm on another gimmick diet; it's another tool to assist in my long-term goal to remain a successful WLS patient.

At 3+ years post-op I'm definitely seeing myself venture into areas I don't like......why?  I haven't determined that yet........as I wake up each day with the attitude that today I'll regain control, only to find myself looking and thinking about food all day and eating mindlessly.  I'd love to have the first 2 years back when food was a chore and I wasn't hungry.  Did I do this to myself?  Probably as I have allowed myself to eat more carbs and those damn sweets that call my name, unfortunately I don't dump so there isn't that extra "enforcement" that many are so lucky to have.

3 Day Liquid Protein Test

Who Should do the 3 Day LPT?
1. If you have gotten off track (or just plain de-railed in your weight loss journey!), then the 3 day LPT is for you.
2. If you find that you are addicted to carbs, are eating junk food, are snacking and grazing, then the 3 day LPT is for you.
3. If you need to jump start your weight loss once again, then the 3 day LPT is for you.
4. For those who have no weight to lose and are not addicted to carbs, this is probably not necessary. Instead, you may want to check out Susan Maria’s Basic Bariatric Eating Plan to stay on track.

Before You Begin:
1. How many days will I do this program? Normally it’s done for 3 days. You may choose to continue for up to 5 days. Anything over this might be excessive.
2. Will I drink ONLY protein shakes or will I add a light supper? The choice is entirely up to you. If you are able to get rid of carb cravings by cutting back to eating a light supper (high protein), then you may want to stick with drinking shakes all day but a light supper at night. However, if you are overly addicted to carbs and need a more aggressive approach, the full liquid shake only approach may be the best for you.

Preparation for the Program:
1. Make sure you have plenty of protein shakes available – there’s nothing worse than to be in the middle of a program and run out of products! Stock up on high protein, low carb, low sugar and low calorie protein powders or ready to drinks. Bariatric Eating sells a wide variety of great tasting protein products.
2. Decarb your pantry – get rid of foods that you should not have (crackers, chips, cookies, high carb sugar free products) as these will be a stumbling block to you. Also, the purpose of the LPT is to get back on track and away from those items that cause you to fail. You don’t want to sabotage your own success by having these tempting products in the house. They do have a tendency to call your name at the most inopportune (usually your weakest) times!

How It's Done:
1. Drink a protein shake whenever you feel hunger (whether it be real body hunger or head hunger) – one person said they drink a shake every two hours. I figured that if a person would start at 6 am, drink a shake every two hours, this would allow them to drink up to 8 pm! (Sounds great)
2. Consume a minimum of 800 calories for the day
3. You may drink fluids after consuming protein shakes. The "30 minute wait period" before drinking after food does not apply in this case.

Keep in Mind:
1. Get off sugar products
2. Some people include a few additives in their shakes to help spice them up such as a little peanut butter, or sugar free Davinci syrups, or a little bit of fruit (although fruits do have carbs, so it depends on what your preference is). If the additive causes you to crave more, DON'T add it.
3. You may want to include thin soups with light vegetables, yogurts or custards as they are considered full liquids.
4. It has been suggested that if you are exercising, drink a protein shake right before your workout.

Transitioning Back to Normal:
1. If you are doing full liquids for 3 days, on the fourth day you will want to add a light supper. When comfortable, add a light lunch until you are back to your 3 meals a day. The LPT will help you to be more in tune with how food makes you feel. In other words, you will know when you are full on a meal. Stop there, do not overeat. Listen to your body and pouch when it says its full.
2. If you did liquid all day and a light supper at night during the 3 days, then just add your light lunch back into the routine.

The BEST EVER

Lei, this is the BEST post I've ever read, thanks lady I always admired you and have been inspired by you many times, thanks lady.

By: Leilani
[Original draft: June 2004 -- Revised: January 2008]

That's the sentiment (scenario) that comes to mind when I hear some of the comments from those who've already had the surgery. In case you haven't made the connection, that's a line Tom Hanks made famous in the movie "A League Of Their Own." Resorting to tears or just giving up every time the going gets tough isn't going to help anyone. Or maybe you're just sick of taking vitamins, or getting in protein is hard and water doesn't taste good, etc. That kinda' thinking is NOT going to make you successful or keep you healthy. ENOUGH already! It's time to LOVE yourself enough to get "TOUGH" with your aftercare. Your long term health truly is worth it!!
Success comes with a backbone, NOT a wishbone!
First and foremost, you have to keep it POSITIVE. As with everything in life, if you think you can't - you WON'T! Simple enough?
I have to wonder when "we" (as adults) finally take ownership for our actions, our life and our health? We have been given a gift, a second chance to actually LIVE life again instead of merely existing on the sidelines. It's up to each of us to do that as healthy and productively as possible.
We're ALL statistics waiting to happen and the insurance companies are chomping at the bit. The bean counters are eager to drop Weight Loss Surgery ("WLS") from the policies; some already have. Don't you know that any negative feedback thrown into the mix only strengthens their cause? I may not be able to control every thing that happens to my body after WLS, but most things I can. I CHOOSE to take control and I will be a positive statistic when the numbers get counted.
We live in a spoiled society, expecting everything in life to come with a buncha really cool choices. Well, guess what? When it comes to your health, you're not always going to get a choice. You either DO IT and stay healthy, or you DON'T and your body pays the price.
The way I saw it, I had a 90 day healing and adjusting period after surgery. My 'super morbidly obese' body had more then enough stores to survive the learning curve. In turn, it gave me plenty of time to heal, adjust and learn. For those of you OVER 90 day's Post-Op, the probation period is over - its time to get serious and LIVE what you've learned.

* You say you can't get in enough liquids through out the day, don't like the taste of water, or just keep forgetting? -- TOUGH! It's not an option anymore. Find a way to do it, get suggestions and tips from others in support groups, message boards, etc. Read, learn and JUST DO IT!! Why do you think there is a choice here?
* You say you don't like the big horse pill type vitamins, or the tart chalky chewables? ...or it's, just too many to bother with? Maybe you just can't remember to take them? -- TOUGH! You gave up the option NOT to take vitamins when you agreed to have your insides rerouted. FIND a way; crushed, minced, chopped, liquified, in a shake, etc. No exceptions, your health depends on it.
* Protein is a must. So you can't get it all in via foods and you don't like the way the shakes taste? -- TOUGH! Either get it through your meals (and there are a many food choices out there) or supplement with protein shakes and bars.

Trust me, I don't drink my protein shake every morning because I think it tastes like a chocolate blizzard from Dairy Queen. It seems the only people that believe that are selling it. I've tried many varieties over the last 5 years. I'd even venture to say 25 of the top sellers/flavors have crossed my lips. For the record? I've yet to find one that is as 'delicious' as boasted by the distributor. So what. My first two years post-op, it was a daily routine, 2 to 3 a day. My HEALTH dictated that I needed "X" grams of protein per day and I did NOT have the pouch capacity. Even now, as a 5 year PostOp, if I'm not getting enough from my meals I supplement with a shake. 'Nuff said.
This surgery is a gift, I owe it to me and everyone else fighting the approval process, to do it right! I will continue to choke down my vitamins, my water and my protein every single day, for the REST OF MY LIFE. Some days will be easier then others, regardless, no days will be missed.
It's all about discipline. Create a routine, set a timer, develop a pattern, tie a string around your finger, glue a note to your forehead, whatever it takes.
You're an adult - take responsibility!

If this surgery doesn't slap a back bone into you, not much will!

3 Years Already!
on February 21, 2008 12:00 am
Has it really been 3 years? Wow, I cannot believe today is my surgiversary......where has the past 3 years gone? Well I know, I am living my friends.......enjoying life, feeling great and loving myself. Never in my life did I except WLS to do what it’s done for me........my goal to not have high blood pressure, diabetes, GERD and high cholesterol........have overall been achieved, 75% of these co-morbidities are in remission, I do have some cholesterol issues still but they aren’t significant and my PCP and surgeon were not concerned because the good/bad ratio are very acceptable. I am healthy, hooray! I no longer sit and watch, I participate in life.....what a dream come true.

From 260.5 lbs to 124.8 lbs, what can I say.....I surpassed my dream; I’m below goal and looking forward to the future. In just a couple of weeks it’ll be one year from my plastics (wow already).......it has taken quiet some time to see myself as others have and yes the head games still try to trick me but when I see myself in pictures I’m amazed. I do see myself has thin, healthy and the glow of happiness because I truly am happy.

Life is grand......the journey continues. I’ll always have to be aware of myself and pull in those reigns when I start sliding, but I firmly believe that if I can stay proactive, stay aware and do what I’ve done for 3 years then I can stay where I am.....do I anticipate some struggles absolutely, the past 3 years have had some struggles. But I’m hardheaded and determined, lol......I won’t fail, it isn’t an option.......I will fight the good fight forever, I will win.

Things I believe will keep me on track:

follow the pouch rules

weigh myself everyday

use fitday faithfully

continue to find that exercise routine that inspires me to keep going.

Exercise has been my downfall and thankfully so far I’ve been able to do this without a total commitment. Is it the right thing to do, NO WAY, I firmly believe exercise needs to play a key part in our success. So as I continue to develop a liking to something that I don’t just totally get bored with, I’ll continue to press on. I am looking forward to more spring weather and outside fun......I have the bike out and have rode several times, this I do like along with walking outside. I look forward to running around with the boys this summer, baseball is right around the corner and with family around I can envision a baseball game or two, because I can.

To my family I want to thank you for listening, encouraging, being supportive and showing concern when needed; you truly are the BEST anyone can ask for. I love you.

To Blane, Conner and Cutter........my life is complete because of you. Being a wife and mother is something I always wanted. Each of you have been there for me....the highs and the lows and I can never repay you.......my biggest wow moments have been from you, things you’ve said, things you’ve done.....I’ve cried and laughed, yall have touched my heart in so many ways.......I love you guys with all my heart and soul.

To my OH friends......you guys and gals have been my cheerleaders, supporters, counselors and therapist, and my inspiration.....thanks from the bottom of my heart for being a part of my life.....I love each of you.

To my God.....without You none of this would be possible.....thank you and I love you.

Hugs,

Regain *sigh* yes it happens every day to so many of us.  In order to make myself accountable I am going to try my best to keep everything in my profile to help others.

Goal originally was 130 lbs, got down to 119 lbs, stayed in the 125 lb area for quiet some time and really liked it there........need to lose 2 lbs ASAP.....would like to lose 7 lbs, will see how possible it is to lose it and maintain.  Yes I'm aware of the bounce back, it bit me in the ass.

Top 10 Mistakes WLS patients make...
on August 17, 2007 1:34 pm
I copied this from Carolyn L.'s profile, she in tern copied it from someone elses profile so I'm not sure who wrote this, very good and something for all of us to keep in mind.

1st Mistake:  Not Taking Vitamins, Supplements, or Minerals

Every WLS patient has specific nutritional needs depending on the type of surgery you have had. Not only is it a good idea to ask your surgeon for guidelines, but also consult with an experienced WLS nutritionist. Understand there is not a standard practice that all surgeons and nutritionists follow in guiding WLS patients. So, it is important to do your own research, get your lab tests done regularly, and learn how to read the results.  Some conditions and symptoms that can occur when you are deficient in vitamins, supplements, or minerals include:

Osteoporosis; pernicious anemia; muscle spasms; high blood pressure; burning tongue; fatigue; loss of appetite; weakness; constipation and diarrhea; numbness and tingling in the hands and feet; being tired, lethargic, or dizzy; forgetfulness, and lowered immune functioning.

Keep in mind, too, that some conditions caused by not taking your vitamins, supplements, or minerals are irreversible.

2nd Mistake:  Assuming You Have Been Cured of Your Obesity

A "pink cloud" or honeymoon experience is common following WLS. When you are feeling better than you have in years, and the weight is coming off easily, it's hard to imagine you will ever struggle again. But unfortunately, it is very common for WLS patients to not lose to their goal weight or to regain some of their weight back.

A small weight regain may be normal, but huge gains usually can be avoided with support, education, effort, and careful attention to living a healthy WLS lifestyle. For most WLSers, if you don't change what you've always done, you're going to keep getting what you've always gotten -- even after weight loss surgery.

3rd Mistake:  Drinking with Meals

Yes, it's hard for some people to avoid drinking with meals, but the tool of not drinking with meals is a critical key to long-term success. If you drink while you eat, your food washes out of your stomach much more quickly, you can eat more, you get hungry sooner, and you are at more risk for snacking. Being too hungry is much more likely to lead to poor food choices and/or overeating.

4th Mistake:  Not Eating Right

Of course everyone should eat right, but in this society eating right is a challenge. You have to make it as easy on yourself as possible. Eat all your meals--don't skip. Don't keep unhealthy food in sight where it will call to you all the time. Try to feed yourself at regular intervals so that you aren't as tempted to make a poor choice.  And consider having a couple of absolutes: for example, avoid fried foods completely, avoid sugary foods, always use low-fat options, or only eat in a restaurant once a week. Choose your "absolutes" based on your trigger foods and your self knowledge about what foods and/or situations are problematic for you.

5th Mistake:  Not Drinking Enough Water

Most WLS patients are at risk for dehydration. Drinking a minimum of 64 oz. of water per day will help you avoid this risk. Adequate water intake will also help you flush out your system as you lose weight and avoid kidney stones. Drinking enough water helps with your weight loss, too.

6th Mistake:  Grazing

Many people who have had WLS regret that they ever started grazing, which is nibbling small amounts here and there over the course of the day. It's one thing to eat the three to five small meals you and your doctor agree you need. It's something else altogether when you start to graze, eating any number of unplanned snacks. Grazing can easily make your weight creep up. Eating enough at meal time, and eating planned snacks when necessary, will help you resist grazing.   Make a plan for what you will do when you crave food, but are not truly hungry. For example, take up a hobby to keep your hands busy or call on someone in your support group for encouragement.

 7th Mistake:  Not Exercising Regularly

Exercise is one of the best weapons a WLS patient has to fight weight regain. Not only does exercise boost your spirits, it is a great way to keep your metabolism running strong. When you exercise, you build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn, even at rest!

8th Mistake:  Eating the Wrong Carbs (or Eating Too Much)

Let's face it, refined carbohydrates are addictive. If you eat refined carbohydrates they will make you crave more refined carbohydrates. There are plenty of complex carbohydrates to choose from, which have beneficial vitamins. For example, if you can handle pastas, try whole grain Kamut pasta--in moderation, of course. (Kamut pasta doesn't have the flavor some people find unpleasant in the whole wheat pastas.) Try using your complex carbohydrates as "condiments," rather than as the center point of your meal. Try sprinkling a tablespoon of brown rice on your stir-fried meat and veggies.

9th Mistake:  Going Back to Drinking Soda

Drinking soda is controversial in WLS circles. Some people claim soda stretches your stomach or pouch. What we know it does is keep you from getting the hydration your body requires after WLS--because when you're drinking soda, you're not drinking water! In addition, diet soda has been connected to weight gain in the general population. The best thing you can do is find other, healthier drinks to fall in love with. They are out there.

 10th Mistake:  Drinking Alcohol

If you drank alcohol before surgery, you are likely to want to resume drinking alcohol following surgery. Most surgeons recommend waiting one year after surgery. And it is in your best interest to understand the consequences of drinking alcohol before you do it.

Alcohol is connected with weight regain, because alcohol has 7 calories per gram, while protein and vegetables have 4 calories per gram. Also, some people develop an addiction to alcohol after WLS, so be very cautious. Depending on your type of WLS, you may get drunker, quicker after surgery, which can cause health problems and put you in dangerous situations.

If you think you have a drinking problem, get help right away. Putting off stopping drinking doesn't make it any easier, and could make you a lot sicker.

My Story

Hello, my name is Dana. As many of you, I've had a lifetime of obesity.....even as young as 4 years old I was overweight. After years of researching WLS, I had the laporscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery on February 21, 2005. My initial consult with Dr. Wongsa was on January 14, 2005, weight of 260.5 lbs. Today at 19 months post-op I'm weighing 120 lbs. and enjoying life.

My insurance had an exclusion and would not pay.....so I was a self pay.....yes it was allot of money but worth every last dime spent.

I feel GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
