Home from the hospital

Sep 25, 2011

I had to be at the hospital at 6am on Wednesday, September 21st, and surgery was at 7:30am. I actually wasnt nervous. I made it thru the one day clear liquid diet without a problem, was in surgery before I knew it, and woke up in recovery, before I even realized I was in the OR.

I had a few complications after surgery. According to the surgeon, my surgery went extremely well, and there were no complications. After I left recovery, and went to my room, the complications started.

The first problem I had was an old friend - vertigo. I passed out after they tried to make me stand up and I told them not to.

The second problem was severely high blood pressure - they wound up calling in the cardiologist, adding several meds, and I am still on a few.

The final complication was high blood sugar. My blood sugar was 200 the night after the surgery, and it wouldnt go down. I wound up getting insulin for a few days.

I left the hospital this afternoon .... finally!!! I showered, ate on my own, and was able to walk quite a bit - the gas is still moving around inside, but I know it is almost out - a few have slipped out here and there, lol...

I finally posted to Facebook about my surgery, and asked only for positive thoughts. I kept everything secret until after thr surgery simply because it is a sense of shame - having to ask someone to alter your body because you cannot control your hand. Now, I have no choice - my hand will kill me if I try to put more than liquids in it!! My pouch is small, and seems to like hot liquids first thing in the morning. If I try to drink  cold water first, it gets irritable... hot decaf coffee seems to do best for me. I like it, and adding in some broth as well seems to make my pouch compfortable. Cold does okay for afternoon, but dinner also seems to like hot. Broth is becoming a steady companion lately... and decaf coffee.

I am going to spend the next few weeks taking care of me. I need to make sure I am healthy, and able to move forward in my journey - life is good, and I am on the losers bench now!!!
