14th post - 3 Weeks Post-op

I am now eating soft foods as my doctor allows. Since switching from the liquid diet to soft foods, I had gained 2.2 pounds back.  I was irritated by the regain, but not surprised.  I have read enough about this surgery to know that mini stalls were not uncommon and neither was small regains.  Not that I was any happier with it by knowing, but I haven’t freaked out.  I first took stock of what I had been eating and drinking.  I am still only consuming about half of what I need to for liquids.  This seems to be my largest problem!  I know when I am getting dehydrated as my urine turns dark and my mouth gets so dry that my tongue sticks to the roof of it.  Another thing that I believe was keeping me from loosing was I was only having BM’s every three days or so.

The diet that my doctor’s office put me on called for low fat or ff foods.  That seemed to go against what the vets on OH say get things going; so I started eating high fat things like sour cream.  Yup, it helped.  I am now only .6 lbs over what I was before.  I also started drinking 1 to 2 protein hot chocolates a day to help get in more protein.  I have only missed about two vits since surgery.  My vits are something I will stay up until all hours until I get every last one in, if need be.  As for my water, I am trying different things to get me to drink more.  I have noticed that drinking the hot chocolate also helps to keep me from getting dehydrated and I add in a few extra ounces of water.

I am almost never hungry.  I make myself eat to get the protein in, nothing taste bad or makes my stomach upset.  By the same token, nothing tastes so good that I really want it either.  It is easy for me to get sidetracked and forget to eat until dinner time and then be like…oh crap, and have to drink and eat a lot of protein late to get some in.  My protein has been between 40 and 55 a day.  When I eat it takes me between 1 ½ hours and 3 hours to eat 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup of food.

I don’t like measuring everything out, but I do.  I guess the bottom line of this week’s blog is…this is not easy; you have to work at this surgery.  Nothing worth having is ever free.
