I investigated all the surgeries, Lapband, RNY, DS, VSG as well as the lesser known ones such as gastric balloon and decided VSG is the best thing for me.  I have chosen VSG for the following reasons:

Total Commitment - Reversing is not an option, Adjustments are not a possibility, Done is Done.
Less Restrictive Food Choices - Overall more food options are available
Does not require adjustment fills or the complications associated with a foreign body
No malabsorption - Already Iron and B12 deficient, don't want more deficiency
IBS and possible Chron's contradicts any surgery with a malabsorption component

Sure there are risks, but after ONE year those that have had it have a lower mortality rate and better quality of life. 

Without it I have about a 1% chance of long term success.  With surgery I have a better quality of life and will save thousands on medications and medical devices.

October 2008 because I was feeling really tired for two months, I went to see my primary care physician.  He tried to weigh me but I could not be weighed on the traditional 350 lb dr scale and they noted 350+ in my records.  I am a need to know kind of person so I went and spent some $ on a Siltec GS1 Glass Bathroom Scale that goes up to 440 and found out I was 365 on the same day I bought  10 bags of candy for Halloween candy for trick or treaters, lovely way to start a diet .

The doctor sent me for bloodwork and sleep apnea testing and my journey began.  I was diagnosed with diabetes, hypothyroid, sleep apnea and athritis within a month.I was on thyroid meds for six months before it was stable and the surgery was allowed.

I have the co-morbities that were resolved within the first sixty pounds lost:

Type II Diabetes
Sleep Apnea
Joint Pain from Early Arthritis
Stress Incontingency

Don't compare yourself, enjoy your personal journey.  It is a slow steady progression not a race. Someone eating 1000 calories and exercising 3xs per week will lose.  The most common cause of weight gain or failure to lose is binge eating pity parties. 

If you are not losing and know that you are not guilty of going off plan you should check for metabolic issues - Thyroid, Fasting Insulin Levels(insulin resistance) and/or Sleep Deprivation(sleep apnea or insomnia).
