12/18/2007 - I had a stall but it was worth it...Onederland!!!

Dec 17, 2007

Well, I've been in a stall for a week and a half.  I was kind of bummed, but have really been ramping up my workout, so I attributed the stall to gaining muscle mass.  I was OK with that, but still really wanted to see the scale move again, you know?  :)

So, this morning I weighed myself like usual, and suddenly it jumped from 202 yesterday to 199 today!  I'm in onederland!  That's right, you heard it, onederland!  I get two goals achieved at once at 199 pounds.  In addition to hitting onederland, I've also officially lost 50 pounds!  Wow!  I really wanted to make 50 pounds by Christmas, and now I have!  I'm so thrilled I can hardly stand it!

Also, I was going to wait until I had hit 199 to start running, but I was so close and so excited about it, that I started a bit early.  Last week I started the couch to 5k running plan.  I found it at coolrunnings.com.  Here's the plan:

A few people on the exercise and fitness forum recommended it.  I also found a guy that developed podcasts to go along with the program.  The music is really upbeat and he tells you when to run and walk, so you don't have to watch the clock the whole time.  They've been a lifesaver.  You can find the podcasts here:  http://www.podcasts.ullreys.net/
So, week one went well.  I was able to keep up with the 60 second runs, although by 30 seconds I did find myself looking at the clock.  I wasn't really surprised though at how quickly I was out of breath, but I was thrilled that I made it through the entire 30 minute workout.  I started week 2 yesterday.  I already see an improvement.  This time I went 60 seconds into the 90 second runs before starting to feel drained.  I am amazed at the change in one week!  It's pretty remarkable how quickly your body can adapt when you give it something new to do, and stick with it.  I may not be sounding so positive about things when I have to run 5 minutes at a time, but who knows.  I'm just really proud that I've started, and I'm really determined to stick with it.

I have been getting little pains.  2 days ago it was a stabbing pain in my shoulder blade.  In addition to running, I've been working really hard on my Total Gym.  I moved up from beginner exercises to the intermediate.  It's been going well, but I've been pretty sore.  The shoulder blade pain went away when I started running yesterday, but was replaced with a sharp muscular pain in my right hip.  A girl can't win.  It was pretty difficult to walk, or even move around much yesterday, but I think it's loosening up today.  I'll work on the Total Gym this morning and see if that helps or not.

OK, I guess this note is long enough!  Lot's to do to finish getting ready for Christmas!

12/08/2007 - I weigh less than my hubby!

Dec 08, 2007

Goal #1 met!  :)  Yippee!!!  I weighed myself this morning, and told Ryan the results - 202.  :)  He smiled, and non-chalantly said, "202?  Wow!  You weigh less than me now!"  Whoo hoo!  That was my first major goal, and in a few more pounds I'll meet goal #2 - onederland!  I can't wait!  I was hoping I'd be able to lose 50 pounds by Christmas, and now I think I'm going to make that goal too!!!

12/02/2007 - "So this is pretty easy!" What???

Dec 02, 2007

I went to a get-together at a friend's house last night.  I had a great time, got a couple of "Wow, you look great" comments, and was really enjoying myself.  People were asking me questions about how I'm feeling, what I can eat, etc.  I'm a pretty positive person most of the time, and was feeling good last night, so I know I was focusing on the positive aspects of how I'm doing, joking around about things, etc.  When suddenly one girl (an aquaintence) speaks up and says, "So this is pretty easy then, huh?"  I was dumbfounded.  I just looked at her and all I could think was...What?  After what seemed like too long, I finally got my wits back, and started to say that I understand that I've only been focusing on the positives, but I certainly would not call this easy.  This is life-changing.  I explained that this is MAJOR surgery.  I was hospitalized for 2 days, and was in pain for a solid 4 weeks afterwards.  I didn't get to eat solid food for 6 weeks.  And although I'm sitting here saying that I've been able to tolerate almost everything I've tried, my options are still limited.  I pointed out that I hadn't eaten anything there, other than one bite of guacamole, water and tea.  No, I'm not hungry, and that's fabulous.  Yes, that makes it easier to be picky when deciding what to eat.  I'm glad that I'm making this look easy, but I'm not sitting around all day just watching the pounds melt away.  This is a lot of work!  I track everything that goes into my mouth, I exercise daily (sometimes twice a day), I am careful to eat new foods only in the privacy of my own home.  She was a little taken aback, but then appologized, saying she didn't really understand everything that was involved.

I hope I wasn't too hard on her, but I don't want anyone to be under the mistaken impression that I took the easy way out.  Anyone that has gone through this surgery, or is seriously considering it knows the truth.  My friends have asked me tons of questions, and have been nothing but supportive, cheering me on and helping whenever they can.  I just assumed that would be the case with everyone.  I need to remember to keep my head on straight and just calmly correct those that are just finding out about WLS.   Yes, I am slowly melting.  Yes, I look healthy.  Yes, I generally focus on the positive aspects in my day-to-day life.  This is all because I have made drastic changes.  I'm proud of the work I've done so far, and I know there is more (so much more) work ahead of me.

11/26/2007 - A Sad Anniversary

Nov 25, 2007

Today is an emotional day for my family.  The accident that killed my mom was 2 years ago today.  A drunk driver.  How senseless.  When I think about it, the memories are still all very fresh:  Sitting on the kitchen floor in shock when my sister called with the news.  Flying up to WI the next day not knowing if my dad would survive his injuries.  Walking into the hospital, knowing I wouldn't be able to deny the events of the last 24 hours.  Talking with Dr's, lawyers, family and friends.  Sitting by my dad's side as he miraculously recovered from bleeding on the brain, a broken neck, ribs and pelvis and punctured lung...not to mention the emotional broken heart.  All of that seems so recent.  Yet, it's been an eternity since I've heard my mom's voice.  I don't want to bring everyone down, but this is my journal and I couldn't let this day go by without remembering mom.  She was such a cheerful person.  She loved with all her heart and made everyone feel comfortable in any situation.  She made me feel like I could do anything.  It was a real compliment this weekend when my niece Dani told me that being with me reminds her of being with Grammy.  She said I talk, look, and act just like Grammy did.  It's nice to hear that, and I know she means it as a positive comment, because she loved Grammy.  All of my nieces and nephews are so lucky that they were able to experience such great relationships with her.
I miss her dreadfully.  About a month after she died, my dad returned home from the hospital.  That first night staying in their house, I had a dream about mom.  It was clear as day.  I was in New Orleans on steps going into a building.  I saw her walking down the sidewalk towards me.  She was wearing a colorful, striped sweater and had a bright smile that went from ear to ear.  She practically ran up the stairs and wrapped me up in a hug so big I could actually feel it.  That hug was real, and I felt so much joy and contentment from her.  Then I woke up.  Initially I was crushed, since it was just a dream.  But I quickly realized I could still feel the hug and the joy.  Now I know that was my mom's last gift to me.  That hug was real.  She was letting me know that she was fine, healthy and happy.  If anyone was prepared for death, she was.  I knew it then and I know it now.  2 years ago today, God opened his arms and welcomed her home.

11/22/2007 - A Successful Thanksgiving

Nov 25, 2007

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  My niece Dani flew down from Wisconsin , and we had a blast!  What a remarkable 17 year old.  She's really got her head on straight.  She's responsible, and smart, but still knows how to relax and have fun.  Reminds me a lot of someone else I know!!!  :)  Oh, and she's absolutely beautiful.  Hmmm.  Tuesday thru Sunday went way too fast.  Tears when we dropped her off at the airport (of course), but we'll be seeing her again in less than a month.  Then we'll be in Wisconsin , so we'll be able to see everyone!

On Thanksgiving day, we went to my friend Tyler's house.  Her in-laws were all there, so it was a good get-together.  The Packers beat the Lions, which was a fabulous start to the day!  :)  What a great season for our team...they've won 9 - 1 so far.  High hopes for Bret Favre and a really young team.  OK...back to the holiday.  :)  Tyler  made the turkey and gravy.  Her MIL Ann made stuffing and mashed potatoes (which were great) and I made green bean casserole, cranberry salad and pumpkin pies (one regular pie and one sugar free.)  Dinner was fabulous.   Tyler gave me a small plate.  I had planned ahead what I was going to eat, and stuck to that.  I was excited because it was my first day of full foods and it turned out great.  I had turkey, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, cranberry salad and a taste of stuffing.  About 2 hours after dinner we had dessert, and I had a small piece of the sugar-free pumpkin pie (minus crust) with a bit of sugar-free cool whip on top.  Yum!  Everything settled fine in my pouch.  After we cleaned up we played some Apples to Apples.  We went home about 10:30.  All in all a great day of Thanksgiving.

So...what am I thankful for?  I'm thankful for friends and family.  I'm thankful for Ryan who loves me the way I was, the way I am and the way I will be.   I'm thankful for this surgery which is giving me the opportunity to lose the weight that I just couldn't lose before.  As of Thanksgiving Day, I was down 40 pounds.  Wow.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

11/13/2007 - My clothes are getting looser!

Nov 12, 2007

Now that it's gotten colder, I'm pulling the warmer clothes out of the depths of my closet.  I can't believe how many sweaters and things are just hanging on me.  I am realizing that I wore my clothes on the loose side (in a sad attempt to hide the fat.)  But loose is different than sloppy.  So, many things are going to have to go to the "giveaway pile".  How exciting!  I don't plan on doing to much shopping, if I don't have to.  I know I can easily get out of control with spending, so I want to keep that in check.  Thanks to Karen from Charlotte, I won't have to!  She volunteered to pass on the clothes she has so successfully grown out of.  They start in the size I'm in now, and go down from there, so I should have some basics for quite some time!  I think I'm going to drive down there this week to pick them up.  I can't wait!  :)
We had friends visit from Tampa this past weekend.  We were friends back when we all lived in Fort Walton Beach, and haven't lived around each other since 2000.  We truly miss them, and it's always so much fun to get together again.  We had a blast with their two kids, and they're adopted greyhound, Racer.  They said they could see a difference in me, but I'm more excited about the whole new me they'll see the next time we get together!  :)

11/4/2007 - I have a small(er) butt!

Nov 04, 2007

So I was putting my PJs on to get ready for bed last night, and my hubby walked into the room.  He said, "Wow, you have a small butt!"    What?  A small butt?  Say that again, say that again!  It was extra exciting, because he hasn't been able to see the weight loss in my face that everyone else seems to be commenting on.  Leave it up to the man in my life to see the change in my butt, but I'll take it!  By the end of the conversation, we both agreed that my butt is not actually small yet, but it is smaller!  That's good, I'll take that!  Let's hear it for my smaller butt!!!

11/2/2007 - I survived Halloween!

Nov 02, 2007

I bought the candy on Halloween day.  When I opened the first bag, I thought the smell was going to do me in.  It smelled like chocolate heaven!  I had already scanned the nutritional info and thought I could have one or two Starbursts without really hurting myself, but by the time I'd dumped 3 bags of candy into the basket, the smell was overwhelmingly sweet.  I didn't even want any anymore!  We sat outside with the dogs and our neighbors.  Everyone came to our yard to pass out candy.  Had a great time.  Someone suggested we should have had some chili, etc out there.  Definitely something for us to keep in mind for next year!  Our neighborhood has really been growing, and every year we get more kids, but this year we actually ran out of candy!  Yippee!  It really worked out perfect.  Ryan passed the last handful out at 8:00, so we shut off the lights and went inside.
Reflecting on the evening, Ryan and I were reminiscing about last Halloween.  He and I ate so much of the candy that we were passing out, neither of us had any dinner, and I know we both ate candy until we were practically sick.  It was just so hard to stop!  This year, everyone else seemed to be eating candy and drinking some beer or wine.  I enjoyed my yogurt as a snack.  It really didn't bother me at all, and as long as I have something to eat, I don't feel left out, and I'm fine!
Once I'm eating regular food and am in a set lifestyle, I fully intend on having a piece of candy every now and then.  Especially on days such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  I believe this tool will allow me to live my life in a healthy manner, and that includes indulgences in moderation.  Telling myself I can't ever eat something is setting myself up for failure, and I'm not going to do that.  I'm just happy that I was OK this Halloween, and I was able to exercise an amount of control.
Now I've started puree'd food.  So far everything has settled just fine, thank God!  :)  I've had Wendy's chili and homemade split pea soup with ham.  I just made some pumpkin custard (made from a recipe found in Susan Maria Leach's book.)  I'll be eating that for lunch, along with leftover split pea soup.  Then tonight I'm going to make chicken salad.  I figured I'd put Ryan's on a good crusty bun.  It's nice to be able to enjoy some more flavors.  My pouch seems to be pretty happy, I hope that continues!  :)

10/30/2007 - The mountains were beautiful

Nov 02, 2007

Oh what a wonderful trip!  The drive went fine.  It took us about 5 1/2 hours to get to Stecoah (not including the stops at the motorcycle shops along the way.)  We got to the cabin about 1 hour before sunset, so we had time to unpack the truck/trailer, and sit out on the porch while the sun went down.  What a beautiful view of the mountains and the valley below us.  Quite picturesque!  The cabin itself was very comfortable.  The dogs sniffed around a lot, and then settled right in too.  Saturday morning we got up and Ryan was itching to ride the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap, so we bundled up and got on the motorcycle.  I was sore, but thought it was just because it was a new way of sitting.  He stopped after 10-15 minutes to ask how I was feeling.  I told him I was sore, but fine.  He offerred to take me home, but I was having fun!  So I said no...let's keep going.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.  Another 10 minutes later and I was in tears.  :(  That stupid pain in my left side!  Ugh!  It felt like it went all the way through from my abdomen to my back.  I guess I didn't realize the muscles that you use (even riding on the back of the motorcycle.)  :(  So, we turned around.  He took a lot of breaks and even offerred to go get the truck to pick me up.  I was really upset, because I was enjoying the ride, and just wanted to feel normal again!  Oh well, by the time we got back to the truck, I was done.  So, then Ryan took off to ride the tail of the dragon and I went shopping!  :)  So, that made it all OK.
The next day we drove all over the place!  Stopped at a flea market where Ryan found a great old-fashioned sickle.  Grim Reaper anyone?  Also went to our favorite store in the mountains, the Mast General Store.  They even welcome the dogs in there, so that was fun for the whole family!  ;)  Drove up the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was beautiful.  You just can't top that environment.  Went on a short, short, short hike up to an observation area.  I think it was less than a 1/4 mile.  But it was all uphill and smoked me!  Wow, I feel so out of shape!  I know it will keep improving as I keep healing, but again...I just want to feel normal again!  We stopped at Harrah's casino in Cherokee and lost a few quarters and then some.  It's all digital gaming.  Not really our cup of tea.  We're more real table game types.  I love roulette and Ryan is a Blackjack and Craps junkie.  Oh well, we went and saw.  It was entertainment for a few hours in the evening.  :)  Next time we go back we'll have to see the show put on by the Cherokee community, Unto These Hills.  Sounds very moving, I guess it's about the Trail of Tears.
Monday morning Ryan ran the Tail of the Dragon again while I got things ready to go home.  :(  I think we'll keep that cabin in our list and will probably return.  Having a kitchen was fabulous, we didn't go to a restaraunt once the entire weekend, which probably ended up saving us hundreds of $$.  Plus, it made it easier for me to live within my full liquids diet phase that I'm on right now.  All in all, it was a great weekend.

10/25/2007 - We're going to the mountains! :)

Oct 24, 2007

It's finally raining here!  God, we've needed it so bad.  It seems odd to be so happy about a rainy day, but it's refreshing, you know?  :)

Last night I tried the samples I ordered of Unjury Chicken Broth flavor.  At first I thought it was great.  It tasted pretty good, reminded me of Lipton cup of soup.  But about 15 minutes after I drank 4 ounces, my belly started grumbling, and I was not feeling good.  I didn't get sick, but I just didn't feel right for about 2-3 hours.  :(  Unfortunately, I drank it at about 6:00, and I couldn't even think about anything other than water after that.  So, I broke a rule.  :(  I only got 54 grams of protein yesterday.

Today is a new beautiful rainy day, and I'm on the right track!  I had a great 30 minutes on the eliptical this morning, tried my first cottage cheese (so far-so good), and am determined to make up for yesterday's low protein.

We're heading up to the NC mountains tomorrow for an extended weekend.  I'm so excited!  Ryan came home from work on Tuesday and announced that he had leave Friday and Monday.  We had planned for a long weekend in the middle of the year, intending to go see the color in the mountains, but had forgotten all about it.  Now it's kind of like a bonus!  :)  So, I got online and found a cute cabin in Stecoah that accepts pets, so the girls can come too!  We're borrowing a friend's trailer so we can bring the motorcycle.  We're going to ride the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap.  Yikes.  I'm not sure if I'm ready for the motorcycle or not yet, but I'll try it out.  That, some hiking, shopping, and a lot of of nature viewing will make for a really nice get-away for us.  I'm sure I'll get tired, but it's my plan to at least try everything.  So, I'm off to pack and you'll hear from me again on Tuesday!  :)  Have a great weekend everyone!
