Having been overweight my entire life, I decided years ago that I needed bariatric surgery. I had friends who had it done before the laparascopic capabilities were available, and I wanted it done then, but now that I have insurance that will finally cover it, AND it is being done laparascopically, that is a plus +++ !!!
I had worked with a lady who died about 3 years after having her open RNY about 15 years ago. She developed some type of hemorrhage in her esophageal area (she had moved and I had only heard bits and pieces, so am not sure of the facts), but was a result of having had the surgery. What I am driving at here, is that I am aware of the ultimate danger, however I feel it is a much more safer surgery now than 15 years ago. I know a girl who had it done about 5 years ago, and I remember feeling jealous because all she had to do was say, "I want this surgery", and VOILA!! She had surgery!!
