Progress

Sep 08, 2009

Started an excercise program at the Community Center today.  It was rough but I did enjoy it.  Hope to start swimming as soon as the bathing suit I ordered gets here.  Should be this week.  I plan on excercising Mon, Wed, and Fri. plus swimming those days.  I also want to just swim on Sundays.  I won't return to work until the 20th after my next appointment.  My job envolves a lot of heavy lifting so that is why the delay going back.  I have done real well so far on my diet.  Most days I hit my protein and liquid goals.  Once I get back to work I can get into a real routine.

First Checkup

Sep 01, 2009

Had my first post-op checkup today.  Lost my eight pounds of water gain from surgery plus six more.  Whoo hoo.  Hard to believe it's only been 12 days since I had my RNY.  Feel great.  According to everyone I saw at the hospital today I am right on track.  I got to add eggs, ricotta and cottage cheese to my diet today.  I bought egg-beaters southwestern and ate a half cup.  Took me awhile to get them down but I wasn't pushing it.  They set a little odd on me for a short time but then moved on down.  My tummy just wasn't used to something that tastes good.  LOL  I will take it slow and easy until my next appointment in two weeks.  Lots of walking.  The weather has cooled so it is nice to be outside.

Home from the hospital

Aug 22, 2009

Came home yesterday.  The surgery went well.  "Textbook"  according to Dr. Petrick.  Had some issues with insulin that was resolved after two days.  Had one real bad night with gas pains.  The nurses were right there with pain medication and got me up and walking which resolved the pain so I could rest.  The staff at Geisinger are wonderful.  They really know their business.  It feels great to be on the losers bench.  The journey has begun and I am up and ready for it.

One More Day

Aug 18, 2009

Until RNY surgery.  I'm excited, nervous, and a little bit scared.  But I know my new life starts tomorrow and from all I have been told it will be one hell of a ride.  I have prepared for this for almost a year and I am ready to be healthy again.  I feel the weight loss is a big extra to this surgery.  I knew at over 300 pounds I was not going to last much longer.  Diabetes is the big killer in my family and ignoring was not going to make it go away.  I am now down to 262 pounds as of this morning partially due to the two week liquid diet.  Whatever works.  LOL  The liquids have been tough but I have accomplished it with only one minor slip up.  But the past is the past and tomorrow is a brand new life.  Those people who have known me for a long time know that I rarely if ever finish anything I start.  Well this will be finished.  My goals are simple.  Wonderland first.  That is the big one.  Haven't seen that for over 40 years.  Then it will be one day at a time and one pound at a time.  I can do this and finish it!!!!

Liquid diet

Aug 09, 2009

Day four of my liquid diet.  This is worse than quitting smoking.  However, I have not worked this hard and this long to screw things up now.  Only eleven days to go before actural surgery.  On Tuesday of this past week I went to Geisinger and met with the surgeon's assistant.  He says I am good to go for my RNY.  I signed all the papers, got my after surgery prescriptions, and signed all the papers.  I am ready for this to be done.  It is about 11 months since I started the whole process.  It has been a long time in coming.  I can see the reason for all the educational classes.  My head is wrapped around the concept of what I am about to do.  I know I could have never stuck to a liquid diet a year ago.  I would never have been able to handle it without the proper training and support I have received at Geisinger Medical Center.  The support is especially important.  I have learned so much from the people that "have been there, done that."  I have one more support group meeting the monday before my operation.  I will be there will bells on.

I met with Dr. Petrick yesterday.  He will do my surgery but not until August 20th.  That's a whole three months away.  Disappointed that it is not sooner but I will take what I can get.  I am down over 35 pounds at this point.  I did go on a binge today.  Refuse to feel quilty about it.  I will be back on track tomorrow.  No excuses.  Going to work on my lung capacity in the next three months.  40 years of smoking really did a number on them.  Not good for surgery.  I will continue to lose weight and exercise.  My new life is just starting.

meeting my surgeon

Mar 31, 2009

Finally got that all important first appointment with Dr. Petrick.  I've done everything asked of me in the last six months of preparation.  I think this is the first thing that I have started that I will actually be able to finish.  I think I will addd that to my list of goals.  I CAN DO THIS!!!  Getting much support from the message board.  Nice to know I have friends out there who have been there, done that, and got the tee shirt.  Small size, thank you very much.
