End of Year Update

Dec 29, 2018

As 2018 comes to a close, I look back with a smile on all that has happened.  I started out the year weighting about 235.  I had over 90 pounds of regain since my RNY in 2000.  I got down to 163 and held it for a few years.  Eventually in 2010 I blew out my already damaged knees and over a 2 year peroid I had 4 knee surgeries including 3 of them being total knee replacements.

About 5 years ago I weighed 258.  I knew I was large, but when ever I looked in the mirror I was able to convience myself I wasn't that bad.  That year I went and visited my cousin and he put some pictures up on Facebook.  I was horrified seeing my 258 pound self staring back at me.  I knew things had to change.  I lost 50 lbs and regained 30.  Lost another 50 and regained 30.  I knew this wasn't the best way to do it, but on a good note I stayed lower than where I started.

I went through a mid life crisis a couple years ago and decided to go back to school.  It took some time but I finally got accepted to a DDS program.  I knew I would be the oldest student there and I couldn't do anything about that, however I was determined to not be the largest one there.  I started watching my food intake and tried to exercise 2-3 times a week.  I started school in June at 208.  I continuted to watch my intake and exercise 5 times a week.  I'm closing the year at 169 pounds, and am determined to get down to my goal weight of 135.  I never hit 135 after my RNY and am excited to be able to accomplishment it in 2019.

Regain is almost a normal step most people go through after surgery.  However, it's entirely up to us whether we use our "surgery tool" to get the weight off again.  It's not as easy as it was 18 years ago, but it's very doable if the determination is there.  I believe 2019 will be a beautiful year.
