Splenic Infarct

Feb 18, 2013

So I went in for surgery Tuesday morning and came home Thursday because I was having some excessive pain. Ended up back in the ER on Friday because the pain in my chest and shoulder/neck was pretty intense, but I also was having a low grade fever. Spent the entire night in the ER getting pain medications, an x-ray, ekg's, blood work, and a CT scan. Dr. Meyers came in to see me Saturday morning, and found that the cause of all my pain was my spleen. The spleen and stomach share some major arteries, and he had cut off blood supply to my spleen when cutting my stomach, and about 5% of my spleen is now dying. It is listed as a complication of gastric sleeve, but I hadn't read about it prior to it happening to me. So right now I'm still in some pain, but Dr. Meyers was great and even gave me his cell phone number so I could reach him directly in case the pain or fever got worse. So far... things are getting better.

I have been pretty nauseous lately, and I wake up in the morning with protein after taste in my mouth which is not helping with the nausea! I know I'm not getting in enough liquids right now but I'm trying. I am still on mostly clear bari fluids because the gas pain is still there, and I don't feel much like eating/drinking anything else other than the protein shakes but those are leaving that nasty after taste so I realize protein intake may become problematic for me. I have been feeling pretty weak, also, but I think it's lack of calories/liquids.

I'm not even a week out, and I'm not feeling too bad, even with the splenic infarct. I have already had sex, and have been walking A LOT! I already dropped the ten pounds I gained in the hospital from the fluids and gas, and an additional four pounds. In less than a week. So I'm happy about that. Can't wait to get to pureed tuna fish and baby food stage. LOL :)
