The only time I use my card is when I go to a buffet. I order off of the normal menu at restaurants, because the childrens menu's typically have fatty foods w/fries. I take 1/2 of it home and have another meal.

You need to remember that just because you have a card, the restaurant doesn't have to honor it. Many people have reported being angry that buffets won't let them use it. Well, the buffet managers, etc., don't have any way to really know whether you had the surgery or not and they certainly don't have enough people to watch everyone who comes in to see whether they are eating a child's portion or not. I am still pre-op, but I've never had trouble ordering just an appetizer or sharing a meal with someone else.

I often order off the Senior's menu. They are more likely to be "adult" foods, just smaller sizes. I have not yet had anyone tell me I can't order from it. For me, I have had an attitude adjustment that has helped me a lot. Instead of looking at amount of food per cost, I think more in terms of a full & satisfying meal per cost. For example, before surgery, I may have eaten a pound or more of food, at least half of which went to waste (ie waist!) say for $15 and I was full & satisfied. Now, I may eat half that amount (or less), spend the same $15, but I still walk away full & satisfied. There's just not the waist, er, I mean wasted amount. Plus, as others mentioned, I often take home my leftovers for another meal or a snack. Maybe it'll be easier to deal with if you think in terms of a "full & satisfying meal" for a certain price rather than $$ per ounce of food.

i use my card in 99% of the restaurants we eat in. only twice was it not honored. one buffet cashier said 'oh yeah! we've seen those here alot lately. tell me about this surgery?' i did, while she charged me the 2.99 childs price. ;-)

I don't have a 'meal card.' I don't feel I need one. I LOVE eating out- and I just order off the regular menu and have left-overs or just order soup (or other app.). I didn't want people treating me differently pre-op, so I don't expect them to post-op. I probably enjoy eating out even more post-op, I can savor every bite (and have some leftover to savor later too!!). Bon Appetite. :)

Hi. I'm about 5 weeks post now and have gone out a few times. I don't have a card and don't think that I need one. Each time we've gone out (once to Shoney's and another time to a chinese BUFFET) I've just simply talked to the waiter and said "I just recently had an oepration and I can only eat 2 ounces. Would it be ok if I only order a small appetizer or just eat off my husband's plate?" Noone ever had a problem. In fact at the buffet I ate a piece of chicken and 2 shrimp and he didn't charge us at all. At Shoney's the waiter said I could have the homestyle buffet and he'd only charge us (child price) if he sees that the amount was a lot. Which, naturally, it wasn't :p It was about 1 ounce of mashed potatoes with about 2 ounces of chicken and gravy on top (only ate a small piece of chicken and left the rest after eating those delish potatoes :) I don't think restaurants will mind offering you smaller anything if you talk to them in a polite yet informative way. Good luck :)

I thought she was asking "where do you get such a card". If she wasn't asking that, then let me. Where do you get the card?

I got my card from my surgeon's office after surgery. While it's nice to have in my wallet, I've never used it, and we go to restaurants all the time. I've never felt the need to use it or to bring attention to myself; I order fromt the senior's menu or order a la carte - soups and salads, etc. and have never had a problem doing that, or sharing with my husband. Check with your doctors to see if they have a card they can give you.

I agree with most of the other people who answered. I've never had the need for a card. I order from the kid's menu or the appetizer menu or I order a regular meal and bring the extra home with me. I eat out often but just avoid any of the "all you can eat" places. That "all you can eat" mentality is what drove me to weight loss surgery to begin with. Good Luck!

There's one on this site: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/restaurantcard.html. I have it, but have never used it.

My doctor gave me one while I was still in the hospital. I've only used it once early post-op. I always order from the regular menu and enjoy an additional meal or two from the leftovers.
