Question:

im 15 weeks out of surgery, stapling only, 48 pounds gone and now all this stuff is happening, help?what is going on? i am 50 yrs old and am a breast cancer survivor and thru the chemo i was pushed into early menopause, so taking an estrogen pill , wearing a patch is not conducive.i am taking prozac weekly, evista, calcium and a multi vitamin.    — sue P. I "feel your pain", lol. I am 51yo; about eight weeks post op and don't know which is up or down. I went totally off antidepressants initially because i was afraid to swallow them. Then I thought perhaps..... So, between that, menopause and the rapid weight loss; every new day is a hormonal adventure!!!!! Monika Walls, DE

Hi, I, too, am with you on this! I had open RNY w/gallbladder removal on 8/14/02 (I'm 45-started hysterechtomy-induced menopause 4 years ago) and since surgery have stopped smoking, stopped my daily 60 mg of Prozac , stopped my Premarin (HRT), other meds AND pretty much stopped eating. I have started developing weird acne with big, sore zits, and my BAD temper has come back with a vengeance. I was at my wit's end while in the hospital and they were as happy as I was when I was discharged! This whole WLS business wreaks havok on every part of our body and mind and we have gone through some MAJOR medical and hormanal changes. I just keep to myself pretty much and hope that "this too shall pass!" Wishing you all peace!

hiya! i had a hysterectomy 5 years ago and was put on premarin which worked fine until i had my wls. about 5-6 mos out i was having horrendous migraines, zits, hot flashes, night sweats...nasty nasty stuff so i saw my ob-gyn thinking she needed to decrease my estrogen since i'd lost weight BUT turns out our "fat cells" process estrogen so by losing weight i was not processing enough estrogen but she didn't want to increase my estrogen since it makes migraines worse (i am seriously predisposed to those nasty headaches) anyhoo, i cannot do progesterone at all (unless i want to kill someone! eek!) so she put me on estratest which is a combo of estrogen and testosterone and it has worked beautifully for me until lately....been getting hot flashes and hot/cold at night so i see her in november and i guess it will be time to try something new or change the dosage! point is that estratest is a good alternative. for me i did have a few side effects (the first few weeks i wanted to box with anyone! lol; my leg/armpit/eyebrow/mustache hair grows pretty quickly...so i shave daily and WAX the 'stache and it is no biggie) i am also bipolar but a few weeks ago went off my prozac (was on only 20mgs daily) cuz i realized i hadn't had a "clinical depression" since pre op! so now i'm only on the depakote for mood control. seems to be working so far...but prozac is in your system for 6 weeks. anyways, i would suggest getting with your ob-gyn and seeing what he/she has to say.... good luck! kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal: 135lbs current: 130lbs

i stopped taking estradiol(generic for the estrogen in premarin) and the metho--what's is (progesterone) about 2 months before i had my surgery. The surgery said it causes bleeding. Then the study came out and said they were getting bad results with premarin and of course everybody pretty much has stopped the hrt! I live in florida where it's hot as hades and the hot flashes i got certainly didn't help. I'm waiting to see my new gynechologist so i can only tell you that i bought some "black cohosh" which is a remedy you can find in any good health food store. I plan on asking the new doc how much to take, but the info can probably be found on any natural remedy website---in fact you could probably find more answers if you go to about.com! They are really informative and lean toward "homeopathic" or natural remedies---but do give sound advice. They just tell you the regular medicines and also offer you the natural ones. Good luck! I will post again if i find out it is a general answer!

This is Adele again! I had better luck on google.com finding information on "Black Cohosh". If you go there under health/alternative medicine you should find it. They explain all the alternative meds you can take for different problems if you don't want to go the regular medical route. Hope this helps!

To everyone suffering with PMS and menopausal symptoms might want to try "Feminine". It is a natural hormone replacement supplement. (Helps greatly with hot flashes)!! The website for this product is pattischmoldt.unfranchise.com
