Question:
Are their any 22 year olds SMO have surgery? I have concerns

I am post RNY, and I would do it again in a heartbeat, and I am doing great. However My daughter is SMO and is 22 and is thinking about having lap band, because she is afraid of RNY. I have given her all the suppoort and shown her this site, but she would like to hear about the experiances of other 22 year olds, or near that age, their sucesses and problems, and she thinks 22 may be to young for such a drastic change. She has tried so many diets, and like the rest of us lost and then regained. I konw the choice is ultimaly hers, but if any one would share their thoughts and feelings we would both very much appriciate it. Thankyou    — wizz46 (posted on July 11, 2003)

Hey, I know the feeling! I am 22 now, was 21 at the time of surgery. But for me- I am ecstatic!!! I love my new size, body and the feeling of normalcy! Have her read my profile. I tried to do step by step in the processes. I had the RNY done though, but for me, 21 years of being overweight and 6+ years of being 200 and nearly 300 pounds was enough for me!!! Even if I gain 20 to 40 pounds back over my lifetime i will still be happy. Heck if i years down the road i gain most of it back- at least i've had some years of normalcy and have experienced it. And of course if I do gain it back, it's due to my lack of self-discipline. Good luck! Its great to fit in small & sexy clothes!

Rosemary, if your daughter would like to talk to someone, she is welcome to contact me anytime. I am having my ryn surgery at the end of August and I am 23 years old. I too was worried about this being a drastic change, but I have researched enough to realize how to get through those fears. Good luck.

Your daughter is more than welcome to contact me as well!!! [email protected] I was 22 when I had my RNY surgery and 23 now and am always looking for someone to talk to as far as the mood swings go and the lack of eating as well as simple frustrations that I've noticed while going thru this. I'm currently 10 months post-op and down 163#'s...so if she wants to talk or have ANY questions what-so-ever...tell her I'm a simple email away!! HUGS

I was 26 y/o when I had my open RNY and am actually only 2.5 months post-op. I have lost 67 lbs. and am feeling so much better already. I still have 200 to go but am confident I will get there within the next 18 months or so. My sister who is 29 and thought that RNY wasn't for her either has been watching my success, is now going to her first consultation with her surgeon to pursue RNY. We just wish we would have done it 10 years earlier to save ourselves from gaining 100 more lbs and blowing out our knees and having bad backs. Mine of which already feel 100% better! Good luck in your decision but I would do it again in a New York minute!!!

I am 23 (my b-day is today, july 12th!) and pre-op for Lap RNY...Frankly, my view is that I shouldn't have to wait another ten years (risking my life in the process) for a surgery I can have today. It is a drastic change. But all the benefits...such as living past 35, having children, being able to participate in life...there are risks, but I believe they are worth it. Your daughter should just do her research, talk to her doctor and make an informed choice

I was 24 when I had my surgery (12 weeks post-op now) and am SO glad I did not wait til I was older. My only co-morbidity was hypertension but I knew there would be more down the line. I want to wear little short shorts and tank tops while I am still young enough to!! I was worried about the changes at first too, but I think the benefits HIGHLY outweigh the risks (and I DID have complications!).
