Question:
Do you think I stopped up the Outlet?

I'm 8.5 months post op but surprisingly little problems for the most part. But I have been eating faster and not chewing so well. I've been trying to remind myself not to do this, but I think I will remember now. ;) I was in the hospital for a nasal surgery and was given a toasted bagel with cream cheese a few days ago. Now I can't get enough of them. I've gone to Duncun Doenuts for the last three days and get a Poppy seed bagel with cream cheese. But for some reason, today I am in pain. I'm assuming that it has balled up and won't go through. I heard some people say to drink a glass of water with meat tenderizer. To be honest, I think I'd throw it up before getting it down. Are there any other ideas on how to get this through, should it indeed be stuck? There is alot of pain in the upper area of my stomach. (Not unbearable pain at this point, but pain!). Also my stomach is growling. I don't know if that is important or not. I'm drinking some diet pop in hope that it will desolve it. Any ideas, other than to remember this and chew better and eat slower. lol Thanks. PS I had the Open RNY on May 8th, 2001. Also, I only eat half a bagel at a time.    — Danmark (posted on January 27, 2002)

Hi Daniel, I have had lots of experience at getting stuck with two strictures and now a small outlet. I do some pretty weird things to encourage it to pass through. I have been known to jump up and down, wiggle all around (not trying to rhyme, hee hee) and if all else fails try to work with gravity with my head pointed downward towards the toilet and rock back and forth. It is really uncomfortable and of course you want it to go through naturally, but if I've been stuck for quite a while I do resort to trying to get it to come back up. Sometimes just the gagging (sorry to sound gross) churns things up a bit in there and eventually passes. I have heard that the meat tenderizer is a bad idea because it can irritate the pouch (found that somewhere in the library when I was stuck one time). Carbonation might be a bad idea being that they tell us to stay away from it, but thats up to you. I had half of a pill stuck last week and it HURT, but after two hours it went through. Oh, and sometimes I just go for a walk and that seems to jiggle things through sometimes. Good luck and wiggle jiggle.

Daniel, This happened to me at 4 weeks out. Ate cheese fondue and BIG chunks of brocoli. I was out with friends, talking and laughing...FORGOT to CHEW!!! Oh man, I paid dearly for that. I think it all got blocked up. It took days for the pain to go away, couldn't eat or drink. Nearly ended up in the hospital with dehydration. I went to my PCP and he did some tests. (Lipid, blood etc.) All OK. Each day got a bit better and after a week, I was ok. I would GUESS that your stomach is having a hard time digesting the bagel and may be blocked. Try sips of water or flat 7-up. Maybe some soup...try to stay nourished. Good luck! Helen

Daniel, When this happens to me (has only been a couple of times), I can usually catch it right off by throwing it up. I know that sounds awful, but the pain I am in is so much worse than a visit to the toilet. LOL tho @ Cheri's post, I'm going to try that next time :)

Thanks all. This is just an update. I ruled out a stricture or blockage of the stomach as I could eat without throwing up. Then I ruled out a bowel blockage as although I'm normally constipated, I have been going regularly lately! So that left one other thing to check... an ultra sound on my gallbladder. The test was on Feb 4th, and it is FULL of tiny gallstones! So there is the source of the pains this time. So here I go again with another surgery. I wanted to update this so if anyone reads this at this late date they can perhaps learn from my problem.
