Question:
Is there anything out there besides protein drinks?

I'm 4 months out, and it seems like my weight loss is slowing. I absolutely hate protein drinks - I've tried them all. Is there anything else I could do? I've heard of protein crystals, but not really sure what they are. Any input would really help. Thanks!    — jengrz (posted on April 5, 2003)

Those are called Crystal Pro and are supposed to very good! They have 17g per serving but can be taken without water, right out of the single serving package. I did a search on Yahoo and came up with a few online stores that sell them. They are a little pricey but would be a good, quick alternative. Also, have you tried mixing the protein mix in other foods? That might help a bit, so I have heard. Good luck!

I am wondering if you have ever tried making a smoothy out of a protein shake? I drink vanilla Real Meals and I just started doing the smoothy thing. I use 6 oz. of water, half an envelope of the shake and about 5-6 frozen strawberries in the food processor. It is very yummy and not at all protein shaky. It tastes like a strawberry shake. A huge treat with 30 gr of protein and only about 160 calories. I think that the key to drinking protein shake is to be creative. On their own they can get boring and the taste can get old fast.

the crystals are like gummy pop rocks, to eat a whole 'serving' of them a day would be impossible for many people, the tube is pretty large, i tired mixing them in water it was foamy like soapy water, very foul. have you tried the designer whey protein blast drinks they are fruity not shake like and the bars are great! (gnc sells them) i ate poached fish for breakfast, could not take a drink, i am getting increasingly grossed out by them and no mattter what i do to doctor them up they still taste like 'whey' which is better than soy, but still has that taste!!!!

Variety seems to be the key for me. I order all kinds of things including the Detour and Uturn bars, the Designer Whey Protein Blast drinks (they are a little sour but if you drink them over ice they are good) and a variety of protein powders to experiment with. I also do a lot of "smoothie" and "icee" type protein drinks. Right now I am drinking an icee type drink. 1/2 scoop of whey protein powder, raspberry flavored, 1/2 scoop of whey protein wild berry flavored, ice, frozen strawberries (about 4), a splash of Designer Blast Absberry (just gives it a kick) and my UpCal D. I mix it in the blender until it is slushy and then drink through a straw. Very light and refreshing. Before surgery I was a big fan of chocolate and vanilla protein drinks and since surgery I cannot handle them. I also like the Lean Bites, they are like little nestle crunches. Not as good as the Uturn and Detour bars but good to nibble on for a change of pace. Next Proteins also gave me the following recipe which I love: Designer Whey Protein, natural flavor, 2 packets of Splenda, some frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries (about half blueberries to strawberries) and one or two frozen raspberries. Mix with water and some ice and it's very good. A friend of mine mixes soy protein or egg protein (don't cook with whey protein) in with cooked steel cut oats, egg whites, splenda and cinnamon and bakes to make some kind of protein oatmeal cookie thing. I find that the only way I can survive is to experiment with different recipes and products. I've tried the crystals but it doesn't seem like there is enough protein in them.

Hi Jennifer, I use proteinex 2 tablespoons have 15 grams of protein. It tastes bad but it it easier to handle than the protein shakes. I take 4 tablespoons in the morning and then I get the rest of my protein in my food. It seems to be working I've lost 100 lbs since Sept.26th 2002. Have a great day!

I just eat regular food, protein first. This is what our surgeon recommends. Never did find a decent tasting protein shake...

I found a website with about 30 recipes for protein shakes. With trial and error I have found several I like. go to www.protein-solution.com/RealMeals_recipes.htm. I have real meals vanilla but use isopure dutch chocolate and it works the same as real meals brand. The Banana nut is my fav. Good Luck

Please don't take this the wrong way...yes. EAT your protein. It's cheaper, easier and tastes much better than any protein shake or bar. Solid foods also fill you up longer, and send a signal to the brain that you are SATISFIED. Liquids don't ever do that for very long. And get's you back to eating with the rest of the world. Best of luck to you, Diane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~www.WeightlossSurgery.ws~~~~~~~~~~~~ Diane

Hi! I hate protein shakes as well, and agree that they are not going to fill you up as much as food. I am pre-op, but have never heard of anyone mentioning soy nuts. You can get them at health food stores by the lb. Get the salted kind though. I swear they taste just like a nuts! Great snack, and all protein. Also, what about beef jerkey chewed up REALLY well?

I'm pre-op so I have little in the way of an experienced answer, but wanted to respond about the crystals... the leader of our support group contacted the maker of the crystals and asked if they were absorbable for WLS patients, and they stated that they are not pre-digested, and do not have enough amino acids to make them absorbable... in other words, they won't hurt you, but you won't get much out of them either. Sorry.
