Question:
Do all surgeons require us to have blood gas drawn

I am nervous about getting blood gas drawn, I have had it dont in the past and it really hurt. Does anyone know if Dr.Caruana requires this test? and do all surgeons require this? Thanks so much, Amy    — Amy S. (posted on July 30, 2002)

Hi, Amy! My surgeon did not require a blood gas.

Amy, my surgeon did not require it of me. The reason they gave me was I was young (32), non smoker, and no history of problems breathing. Hope this applies to you. I would just call your surgeon's office and ask, that's what I did. I would like to add, if you do have to have it done, whether it hurts or not depends on the skill of the person administering the test I guess because some folks on this site said it didn't hurt at all (and they had been dreading it) Good Luck Sweetie.

Amy, I woke up from surgery with an arterial line in my wrist where they were monitoring my blood gas. I don't think it will be required pre-op though. The only time it was even mentioned to me pre-op was when I had my sleep study, and the respitatory therapist said only if my O2 sats. dropped below 90. I would talk to the doc about my fears if I were you. A blood gas (as you know) requires puncturing an artery and making D**n sure it clots before releasing pressure afterward. Hope this helps. Best Wishes!

AMY, MY DOCTOR ONLY REQUIRES IT IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OR BREATHING PROBLEMS. IF YOU DO, PLEASE HAVE THE TEST. IT COULD SAVE YOU A LOT OF PAIN AND SUFFERING LATER.

Hi Amy, My pre-op testing required me to have a blood gas. I went to Orange Coast Memorial Hospital in Fountain Valley, Ca. I've heard good things about the person who does the blood gas, his name is Ken and I felt nothing!!! He had a hard time finding my artery in my wrist and he didn't want to chance it so he went half way up my arm and in the first try got it :) Good Luck
