Question:
Can eating salad cause Dumping?

I need to know what is going on when with my body when the dumping occurs. Do I have to stay away from liquids when I am going through it. Its awful, many trip to the bathroom. I also feel awful for the next few hours. This has happened at least 10 times since my RNY in August. I try to be really careful what I eat. I need to hear from others that have expieranced it and am looking for advise.    — taryncarrol (posted on December 27, 2001)

What kind of protein are you adding to your salad? Are you chewing the salad thoroughly? Too much salad dressing that contains more than 10 grams of sugar? When I start to dump I suck on ice chips and that helps me feel somewhat better. Actually, salad is one of the few things I can eat more of, but we're all different. Good luck!

Ok. I must respond to this one....I DO dump on salad! I cannot tolerate lettuce (even by itself!). I am 6 months post op. I can eat carrots. I cannot eat celery. I cannot eat most raw veggies and never ever lettuce. Tomato without the skin is ok. I can tolerate all overcooked veggies nicely. But..salads make me throw up and the "dumping" icky feelings last for about 2-3 hours.

My surgeon says you can dump on ANYTHING. Its not limited to sugars and fats, just MUCH more common for them.

What type and how much dressing are you putting on your salad?? If you are using a lot of high sugar/high fat dressing, then that's probably what is causing the dumping when you eat salad. I seriously doubt that it's the veggies themselves...unless you put something like avocadoes or fruit in your salads. My boyfriend had his rny over 15 years ago and he still dumps when he eats bbq sauce and regular salad dressings. But, I notice that he pours on a LOT and I think it's the quantity that causes his dumping.
