Topic: RE: Pain Symptoms
Hi Lisa,
I had my surgery about the saame time you did!
I also have the same sort of pain you describe and it has had me in the hospital, where the MD there said it was REFLUX! Yeah right.... later he explained that as the food passes through the esophagass it can irritate the diaphram and then cause the spasams...... WHAT TO DO....... not much... ... (grrrrr) I got the standard lecture about small meals often and no liquids with soild meals. Beacause this also cause my heart to race I was also given a bata blocker, but that makes my BP go low so I was told not to continue with that.
WHAT I HAVE FOUND TO HELP: of course follow the meal plan, eat small amounts of food and drink liquids separtate from meals. Warm foods are better than cold ones.
When the pain does happen I also use a heating pad (over tummy) and sit in a reclined postion. Sitting straight up causes the rib muscels to spasam as well, and lying down will increase the reflux.
I would also ask you MD about testing your for an ulcer. This is down by an endoscopic exam ( tube down your throat -sedated not painful)
Sometimes I feel crazzy as the pain can be so intence and the MD's say there is no real problem or anything they can do for help.
GOOD LUCK
Lisa.
OH you also may have become latoce intolerant..... I have and I love milk. When I drink it now pain is sure to follow.
Topic: RE: 33 weeks post LAB results driving me crazy
Hi Dawn...
The ulcer is on the surgical line....... of the anastiomossis (?) it looks nasty and is showing no signs of healing. I take three different meds for it. Thanks for the information about maybe the ulcer is keeping the vit. fro getting asorbed , or maybe the meds I take for it. I wil ask the MD when I see him next week.
Topic: Pain Symptoms
Here is the whole scope of things, sorry this might be kind of long.
I had my RNY on August 31, 2004. In mid-April 2005 I had horrible pain at the top of my abdomen. It was like being in hard labor with waves of pain. It went from under my rib cage across top of abdomen and under the other rib cage in waves of pain. Any movement or jarring caused sharp pains in the same area. The centrifical force of me taking an on ramp in my car increased the pain. Each step I took increased a sharp pain, all of this on top of the waves of pain that I was having. I truly believed I was trying to get an obstructions. After laying in my bed and sitting up indian style and rocking I decided to takes some Dulcolax, Tums and Colace. Anything to force through whatever was in there before a blockage could occur.
On Friday May 13, 2005 after eating a lunch with a moderate amount of fat in it I got the waves of pain starting again. Not nearly so severe and I could stay at work, but it was same place with wave after wave, just like labor pains, only high up across the top of the abdomen, and worsened after supper as well. Each time I have eaten since (esp. over weekend and yesterday) it seems I can feel it and it is somewhat uncomfortable like something is creating a spasm in my upper abdomen.
An ultrasound of the gall bladder showed no stones, thickening of the walls or sludge and the biliary duct was the perfect size of .38 for my age.
Anyone have any idea or similar symptoms?
Lisa

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I have an ulcer in my pouch also. They put me on carafate (nasty liquid) and doubled my Nexium which have brought mine under control. I had my surgery in August, my scope where they found the 80% of my pouch was covered in an ulcer. Since then things have gotten better except for a really brutal stomach virus in February.
I will keep you in my prayers that things will work out for you. Please try to remember that your attitude about the procedure and you recovery will impact your successs. I will keep you in my prayers!! May God Bless and Keep you!!!

Topic: RE: I want to eat all the time
i found myself snacking on popcorn, because i craved the saltiness. Sure enough, craved something sweet later on. What the heck is going on?! We must fight it with all our might!
But seriously, i hear ya, i'm the same way. I went to the market and bought honey roasted cashews, popcorn, and just crap that I never really craved before, nor had. I gave all my snacks to my coworker, let him gain the weight, he's skinny as heck! LOL. Down as much water as possible, have protein drinks to curve the appetite and indulge very seldomly. It seems we are all going through this whole new situation, just gotta keep our heads above water and drink that darn water while we're at it!
I usually have a 2-3lb loss and this week i gained 2lbs. I had not gained any weight since this surgery, and sure enough, did this week. I'm so disappointed but just realize i gotta do something about it asap.

Wow. Today I weighed in at 154, and even though my weightloss has SLOWED WAY DOWN, I finally hit the "NORMAL" BMI for my height (5'6"). I feel great!!! My BMI has gone from 42.0 to 24.9!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!! I can't believe it's only been a little over 9 months... what journey!
Last week I went shopping and bought some clothes in a size 8!!!! Can you believe it??? I can't! I'm wearing a size medium in shirts/dresses!!!! All of that in such a short time period... I can't even begin to say how thankful I am that I was able to have this surgery.
I really need to post a new picture on my page so everyone can see the new me... I guess I've been lagging on it b/c I wanted a dramatic difference! I'll have my girlfriend take some of me this weekend at my GRADUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great week this is!!!!
Lots of love, (and thanks for all of the support through this!)

Topic: I want to eat all the time
In the last month or so, I have to confess that I want to eat a lot. I'm not saying I'm hungry, because I'm not, really. Even after I have eaten a meal, I find myself daydreaming about food. I am snacking a lot more at work. I really crave something sweet, and then eating that makes me crave something salty or crunchy. If I eat a meal, then I still only eat about a cup or so of food, but I find myself snacking more and more because I want to eat all the time. I know it's not physical hunger, but I always feel like I'm missing out on something delicious. Sometimes I'll think "well, I deserve to go to the store and get such and such," even though I eat a variety of foods. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to combat this?
