Hidradenitis Suppurativa Better Or Worse after Weight Loss?

I suffered with that in my groin area earlier in life..my 20's and 30's.  They tried to put me on several types of antibiotics, which then caused bad yeast infections.  It does not have anything to do with yeast.  It is caused by a bacterial infection in the sweat glands.  The only thing that took care of it was surgery, that actually went in and cut out the area where the glands were located.  I had 3 surgeries to remove them in my groin area.  I never had a problem with them again.  It wasn't done under any form of plastics....my regular doctor diagnosed them and then sent my to a surgeon to have them removed.  The are common in the groin and under the arms.  Excess weight and trigger them because of the sweating, but surgery is a cure.  I would go to see your general practitioner/internal medicine (your regular doctor) and have him diagnose and send you to a general surgeon.

Antibiotics Don't work at all the the HS itself It only works on secondary Infections that sometimes comes along with HS...At least that is what I have found...

I was always told that it is cause by a over abundance of Sweat glands that fill and don't drain.. The problem is that not many Dr's even know what HS is let alone know how to treat it.

I have had several surgery's done by my general surgeon that is just not doing me any good..  It may take care of the one cyst or the few they remove but they always come back and usually worse than before. So that is why I am now getting another opinion from a plastic surgeon not just for the removal of all the extra skin from the weight loss but to completely excise all the infected tissue.. I am just hoping that it will also take care of the extra skin..U know why not try to get it all done at once...;-)

I dunno about the plastics, Lucy, that would be nice if it were covered.

My first HS outbreak came when I was still thin back in the 70's, so I am not really sure that weight coming off is going to make any difference at all.  I have had 2 outbreaks since my surgery last October.  I was told that it is an autoimmune disorder that flares and the only thing I can do is treat with antibiotics.

My daughter also has this issue with the HS so maybe there is a genetic familial component to it?  She is a medical researcher and has told me that since it is an orphan disease there isn't much money thrown at it to find a cure.

When you have your appt, do come back and let us know what he said?

Hi Lucy,

Mine has almost completely resolved with a medial thighplasty. I occasionally get a flare up near the groin in the same exact place, but now I know I cant wear tight underwear on my scar line. Most of the bad area was cut out when the removed the the skin from my thighs.
Surgery is almost the only way to resolve infected areas because the nodes are connected and if you mess around with the infected areas they spread to other nodes.

I've not had WLS yet, but I have lost and regained up to 100 lbs at a time. When I lost weight the HS seemed to be not as bad. Hope that will be the case when I do have WLS.

Thank you Everyone for Responding!

I have had HS for over 30 yrs now.. It was Diagnosed after my First son was born in 1985 so I have been fortunate enough to at least have known what this was for sometime now..

But after all the Regular treatments of Antibiotic's ( that Do NOT work ) and many many I&D's and numerous Surgical removals of many of the cysts. I still am dealing with this on a daily basis.

My main areas of problems are in my both of my armpits I have severe tunneling and on my left arm I have one huge lesion that has spread into my Batwing area.. Where all the extra skin is just hanging..I have never had one on that part of my body before and it is spreading almost down to my elbow now.. That is why I have a appointment with a Plastic surgeon.

It is very painful all the time I have bad Itching and burning in this huge one I have right now.. Both armpits are full of several cyst but the one that is spreading down my arm is really worring me right now.. I have had cultures done on it and it comes back clean of any secondary infection such as MRSA or Staph but that worries me all the time..I have been very lucky over the years that I have never had a secondary infection. I have had celluitus many times though..

I will Let you know what the plastic surgeon has to say.. I saw Dr Turkel in Indy she is a plastic surgeon there and she thought that it was to bad for her to mess with so she recomended that I see a plastic surgeon at a Burn unit. So if they have to do Skin graphting they would be more able to handle me and my after care..

Again thank you all for responding I was just curious as to how you all have been after the weight loss and I am always looking for something that may be helping someone that maybe I haven't already tried.

Lucy

Many HS patients are looking for what works best for their ailment.

Is it true that some HS cases have been cured?

In the internet, I have found several people who claim to be cured of Hidradenitis suppurativa.

Claire who is one of these cured cases has written about a number of treatments she has used for HS.

And one treatment has brought her total healing and she is recommending the same for other HS patients.

She says - because her case was severe and she got totally healed, she believes many HS people should give this a try.

She thinks many will improve and get similar results as she did.

I have tried some lotions and a few other therapies with little

success. However, at some point I just got tired of going to a number of doctors and skin specialists.

I decided to try Claire's recommendation.

Am I cured?

I am 2 months free of HS using same treatment claire used.

If I go the 3rd month and still no boils, eruptions or whatever,

then I’m cured.

I invite HS sufferers to view her article at:

I have HS, too! I HATE it. This is one of the reasons why I desperately want weight loss surgery. I truly hope my flare ups lessen after the surgery.
