Thinking of DS - Weird Question

I had a VSG back in 2009 and have lost alot of weight but my behavior hasnt changed.  I basically learned how to get past my VSG by eating popcorn and 7-11 slurpees.  Because of the junk food I have eaten, my weight loss went from 100 pounds to just 65 pounds because I have regained.  :(

In April of this year I had hernia repair.  Now, my hernia has reopened and I am in need of surgery again.   Because I wanted to see only one surgeon, I went to my WLS Surgeon.  His suggestion is to go with DS.

I have found this site to be very informative -

     http://www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-procedure.html

But I am not 100% certain of what is really happening.  So is the the bottom line I still can eat all the crap I have been eating but now it wont be absorbed because of the DS procedure?  Will I get sick or have the runs all the time.  I havent seen any sites that clearly tell me what will happen if I eat a certain type of food.  Say for example, a sugar filled soda?  Or a bag of fat laced cheddar popcorn?

This is my horrible diet today - slurpees, popcorn, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and the occasional chicken strips.  Does the DS condone eating the crappy food and just pu**** through faster?  If anyone can give me guidance of where to look on what happens after I eat something, that would be extremely helpful.

Thank you

Oh my.  Um, why did you have WLS if you aren't willing to change your thinking at all?  The DS is forgiving for OCCASIONAL indulgences, but living off a diet as you have been, will still cause you to have issues with regain, deficiencies, and possibly gas/diarrhea depending on how your body handles things with the DS.  Have you looked into counseling to figure out why you are continuing to eat the way you are?  No WLS is a magic pill.  With the DS there are certain things you will malabsorb, the common consensus is this break down-

Fat absorbed- 20%
Protein absorbed- 50%
Complex carbs absorbed- 60%
Simple carbs absorbed (your junk food)- 100%

So no, you can't just eat what you have been with the DS and have it get "pushed through faster".  I truly, truly hope you will spend a LOT of time researching the DS before you even consider moving forward.  The DS can, and WILL kill you if you don't do what you need to do postop.  Vitamins, protein, fluids (and no, not sugary drinks either) and strict adherence to your labs and health are vital and non-negotiable.  Going as you are with your VSG would have you in a world of hurt (physically and health wise) VERY quickly with the DS.

That's about all I can nicely say...  So I'll just

 Hi Traute,

So with the DS, we absorb approximately:

20% of fats
50% of protein
60% of complex carbs
100% of simple carbs

The food choices you make after the DS should generally be based on that premise. Fatty foods and protein foods are great choices. Complex carbs are good choices. Simple carbs except on special occasions are not a good choice.

To be frank, if you are not willing to give up the slurpees, even the DS probably won't work for you. No surgery will let you drink liquid sugar without absorbing the calories. If you don't think you can be compliant with the DS way of eating, I would NOT recommend having surgery.

You will have to change your eating habits, period. The DS requires a commitment to get in at least 100 grams of protein every day.

In return, the DS is the most forgiving surgery. So there are lots of great, satisfying choices we can make that don't feel like deprivation. Bacon, eggs, buffalo wings with extra blue cheese sauce, crab legs dipped in butter, all the cheese you want. These choices are healthy with the DS because of the way our bodies work.

Things like cookies, cakes, potatoes and sugary drinks are not good choices. But I personally find I don't miss those things as much when I can eat as much cheese and bacon as I want.

Analyzing your diet today from a DS perspective:
-slurpees - bad choice, you will absorb 100%
-popcorn - okay choice for when a bit further out from surgery, you malabsorb about 40%
-eggs - great choice
-bacon - great choice
-hashbrowns - not so great choice
-Chicken strips - good choice if they aren't too breaded

As for the side effects, those really depend on the person. A number of DSers get gas or diarrhea from certain foods - especially simple carbs and white flour. Others don't. You definitely can't count on negative side effects as a deterrent, but they could definitely happen.

Stick around, read and keep researching. Good luck.

OK, I am going to say it like it is. You might not like this post, but i think that you really need to hear this.

You can out eat any weight loss surgery that you have, yes even the DS.

If you want to be successful with WLS then you need to being willing to make LONG TERM, PERMENANT changes to your eating habits.

With the DS it is essential that you get enough protein each and everyday. Trust me, I wasn't getting enough for awhile and it is not a pleasant place to be.

If you are eating carbs all the time (like popcorn, Slurpee's, hash browns, bread etc.) you will not lose the weight and keep it off.

Plus if you are having a hard time following the VSG eating plan at 18 months out, do you really think that you can follow the DS vitamin requirements?  Vitamins are not optional and many of us are taking pills 6 times a day.  NOT OPTIONAL!!!

If you think that you want the DS, I would suggest that you spent some time (like several months) in therapy to deal with eating and food issues, then think about the DS again.

1. There is no WLS that will let you eat crap without regain.

2. Everyone is different, what may give me gas doesn't bother someone else.  What may give me diarrhea may not bother someone else so none of us can tell you how foods will affect YOU.

3. With the DS you HAVE to get your protein in DAILY.  This is non-negotiable, so there isn't a lot of room left for crap.

4. Of all the WLS, DS is the most forgiving so if you happen to eat crap occasionally you will probably continue to lose weight, especially early out.

5. If you already have the VSG you may not lose as fast or as much as a DS done all at once so you may have to be more dilligent about what you eat.

YMMV,

Ditto what they said.

They explained it PERFECTLY.

You need to deal with the reasons you are self-sabotaging first.  THEN have the DS completed.  Not the other way around.

You can out eat ANY surgery.

Sorry. The DS is not a surgery that will allow you to eat simple carbs (sugar) and still loose weight or not regain weight.

The DS is the most forgiving surgery and allows for the most normal diet for life, but no surgery allows you to eat like you describe.

With the DS you will have to get 100-150 grams of protein a day by food and/or supplements. This is not negotiable. If you are not able to commit to getting this protein in every day for the rest of your life you should really not consider getting the DS.

For a good idea of what people who have had the DS eat at various points post-op you should scroll back and read the Bites Vites and Exercites thread which is posted here every day.

And yes, people who have had the DS do pretty much get a free-ride on fat. It varies per person but most folks eat full fat dressings, sour cream, butter. Early out of course not, as our tummies need time to heal, but later on these foods are not off limits for most people.

I'm a pre-op, but my impression after reading this is:
DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

My response may seem extremely *****y, but I'm fighting at the state level to get my virgin weight loss surgery.
Here goes:

No, you can't have the DS, eat crap, and expect this TOOL to work for you.  Not only will you still absorb the sugar calories, but based on what others with the DS have experienced, you will likely suffer.  Smelly gas, bad BM's and all the other things that give the DS a bad name and which, as a matter of fact, can be mostly eliminited by the patient acting like a responsible adult and following a proper DS eating plan.  You may see the amazing transformations by other DSers, but it takes work and commitment.   It does not sound like you are willing or able to do that based on your brief post.

(I could be completely wrong about you, but asking if you can still eat crap and lose weight because it will go through your system faster shows IMO a lack of the commitment and personal responsibility that is the cornerstone of a successful DSer.)

Perhaps you should cut out the crap you acknowledge is in your diet?  Otherwise you will almost certainly fail with the DS and in the future will skew the stats for those of us willing to comply with a proper food plan.

Oh yeah, and you will have to supplement like crazy if you get the DS.  Otherwise you will be very sick and perhaps die.  Read through some old posts re:DS supplementation.

PLEASE, as someone who is fighting for the DS, do not have this procedure done if you are not going to do whatever is necessary to succeed.    Not only is this stupid in my opinion, but as I noted above, can make it that much harder for people willing to do what is necessary to be able to get this surgery.   So few doctor's are qualified to perform the DS and if the negative rumors surrounding the DS (No, most DSers don't **** their pants all the time)  and bad stats from non-complient, sicky patients may make that number dindle further in the future.

I suggest you take a hard look at yourself, put on your big-girl panties, and take some personal responsibility for your regain / problems with the sleeve.   You recognize your choices have not been great - so change them.
I truly believe the DS is awesome, but if you aren't willing to comply with the much less challenging rules of the VSG, you won't do well with the DS either.

With the DS, you can expect to malabsorb ~80% of fat calories;
                                                               ~40% of protein calories;
                                                               ~40 % of complex carbohydrate calories;
BUT YOU WILL STILL ABSORB ALMOST 100% of simple sugar/carb calories.

I'm sure some others will put in their 2 cents.

Kim

P.S.- just realized I'm PMSing.  But I stand by what I've said.

I am in no way a perfect DSer, but are you freakin' kidding me? That's all I can say that is even half way nice, so I'll stop there.
