Wellll,
If he has had a hard time being convinced that YOU need a proper vitamin regime, who's to say he will be convinced that HE needs a proper vitamin regime? And if money is tight enough that he didn't want you to buy vitamins, how can you afford two peoples monthly vitamin intake? Just questions you guys need to think about.
I personally would say no, but only based on what you've posted here.

Shannon,
The other thing to consider is, his sleep apnea my not be weight related. I thought mine would get better and it isn't, I found out it is not related to my weight it is related to my deviated septum. That is a whole different surgery to fix.
If the intent is to fix his sleep apnea you might have him go to an Ear, Nose and Throat dr to check it out.
As for gaining weight to qualify, everyone's insurance is different. I had to show that I was a certain percentage overweight for 5 years in order to qualify for surgery. Before you recommend he gain weight you should check out the requirements and determine what it is he needs to fix.
Godo luck!

I know people who have gained weight to qualify for surgery. I also know people *****sorted to things like wearing a weight vest to their consult. People will do what they have to do to survive. And that's what we are talking about here, survival. Insurance company rules are arbitrary and discriminate against many people. The whole system is corrupt and unfair..... Who am I to judge anyone who finds a way to bend the rules?
Chances are , your H could probably benefit greatly from the DS. Truth is, without major intervention of some kind, he will probably continue to gain weight as he ages. Most people who tend to be heavy, get heavier over time. And their comorbs get worse too.
My H had a bmi of about 27 when he had the DS in Spain to get rid of his diabetes. That was more than 8 years ago and it was the best thing he has ever done for himself. We self paid and went to Spain because insurance was happy to pay for a lifetime of being diabetic but they wouldn't pay a nickel for the surgery that cured him.
