Topic: RE: Lisa Presley's Death Determined to Be Due to Delayed Obstruction from D.S. Surgery

Well. I've learned the hard way this past six months that doctors don't always listen. I had emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction in early May and had been reporting symptoms since March to any and everyone who would listen. I got punted several times over that time between my WLS clinic and the GI clinic and my PCP.

Even after clearing the obstruction, I still have all the same symptoms. You can bet I'm being vocal about it but my next follow up is in over a month. I'm trying to get it moved up. All of that to say, she may have been reporting it and not being heard.

yep - like Batwingsman said, she supposedly had abdominal pain for MONTHS and never went to see a doctor about it. Bowel obstruction is a potential complication, although it's pretty rare - but for God's sake, if you have abdominal pain for months on end, you really should see a doctor about it. Sheesh!! She'd very likely still be alive if she had.

Here's more info on small bowel obstruction, so that post-ops may know what to be on the watch for. Strangely enough, the article says that Presley had been complaining of the painful and distressing symptoms of the obstruction for months before she passed. No idea why she didn't contact her bariatric surgeon in regard to the matter all that time. By the time of her death, she had about 30 feet of blood-starved bowel as a result of the obstruction, the autopsy reports.

OMG .. Now something for all of us who have had the surgery to be concerned over .. I wonder how long ago her D.S. was performed? However, looking at past news articles, about 10 years ago she was beaming over her weight loss success, telling media that same was supposedly due to diet and exercise changes on her part.

Topic: RE: Anyone know of a multivitamin without B6?

Aloha teacha, I do still have good lab work on all vitamins including B6 in the desired range :) Sorry, I don't really know what you mean by bariatric multivitamin? If you are referencing the pre-packaged A-D-E-K I have never been a fan as I need different amounts than they contain (e.g. I take vitamin A once a week, vit E and 50K of D3 every day, and K (all 3) twice a week. Hope that helps & good luck on your journey!!

Hi There!

Did you still have good lab work on all the other vitamins after taking this multivitamin because it is not a bariatric multivitamin, or do you still need to supplement with the other vitamins? Thanks!

Addendum to my last post. My farts and stool no longer smell really bad. If you decide that the D/S is the weight loss surgery for you, know that you can no longer eat processed carbohydrates if you do not want to gain your weight back and have farts and stools that stink to high heaven and linger long. But I will add that I have no regrets.

Topic: Long time no see! - 13 year update

I realized the other day that I hadn't been here in awhile and talking with a friend about the types of people you see on boards early on that scare you into thinking Orange Juice will ruin your life post-DS surgery I thought "I need to go back and tell people what it's really ilke to live with the DS."

I'm 14 years out of surgery. I had it in April of 2009. I was 453lbs at my highest weight. I have not been so much as over 165lbs since that first year of weight loss. I also had a 150 CC and my doctor was Srikanth at the Fife Bariatric Center of Excellence here in Washington.

In the beginning I was strict - but also kinda terrified - in my diet. Egg and cheese crust pizzas, eating only the meat off burgers, it was an okay life especially to lose weight quickly. But now I don't much care. I stick to the rule of "Protien first and less sugar and volume eating in my day than I used to."

The things I eat would never tip someone off that I had a weight loss surgery - a snickers bar, a doughnut, white rice, a glass of juice, whole milk, creamer with sugar, mashed potatoes, an elephant ear at the fair. But it's far far less. The DS taught me to listen to my hunger and satiety cues so I don't over eat. I might eat HALF a donut or one donut. I'll have a cup of rice as opposed to four. I'll eat half a pint of Ben and Jerry's not half the quart. Now I would laugh in your face if you tried to get me to eat an egg and cheese only crust pizza. No thank you.

The best part of surgery is that all of my four kids - One born post weight loss - weigh less at their respective ages and so far throughout their lives than I did at those ages. I grew up in a household where everyone got their own large pizza with their own toppings. Now I buy one for a family of five. Everyone gets two slices. If your hungry later have a PB and J. Again, learning to listen to their actual hunger cues has been an invaluable gift and the real working tool part of my surgery.

I know my DS still "works" I get vagus nerve irritation and get sneezy full when I eat something too quickly and fill up too fast.

But basically I just live my life, I never get on a scale, I take vitamins, and get my levels checked. I don't drink any extra protein.

I got the Duodenal switch to have a "normal" relationship with food - because I fu*king love food. And I still do. I love pasta and good bread and to bake cookies and have sundaes for dinner with my kids. And that's what I get to do and I couldn't be happier.
