what should i be eating?
Hello everyone,
7 days until surgery, and the Dr did not put me on any kind of diet.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to eat or should i continue on as normal
what did you guys have to do? also does everyone have a drain put in or is that just my surgeon. I think that is weird waklking around with a drain in you. thank you everyone for your warm welcome to the forum i just hope i dont wear you out with all my questions...................... Krissy
I'm having surgery next Tuesday and only have to be on a clear liquid diet the day before. I'm so glad I don't have one of those doctors who makes you do clear liquids for two weeks. That seems like it would be so hard.
Yes, my surgeon said that he puts drains in. Also said that I may have three instead of the usual one.
Best of luck with your surgery.
Nancy
My doctor did not put me on a special diet ahead of surgery (just the day before). You really should call their office and ask what their protocol is. You do not want to show up the day of surgery and find out you should have done something different.
As far as the drain goes, I assume you are having open? I think that everyone I know that has open has a drain. It is a pain, I will not lie to you but it is not in for more than 10 days, it is far from the end of the world. You will find that you adapt perfectly fine to it. My son called it my alien when we went out in public. If it shifted a little and I had a buldge showing he would tell me that the alien is coming out to play. It was cute!
You will be fine, deep breaths.
Come back with any and all questions, that is what we are here for!
Yep.. get on the phone and find out. I was on liquids for 10days prior to surgery. It's supposed to shrink the liver and other organs so it's easier for them to do their magic. Check about bowel prep too. Some do it two days before, some one day before surgery. Check w/ your surgeon about getting your scripts written in advance so you don't have to mess w/ the pharmacy when you get released from the hospital.

Oh, Oh, I did not read your question correctly, I am so, so sorry. I thought you were saying that you already had surgery. Again, touch base with the doctor's office about your diet. The only thing I did was that I needed to be on a liquid diet the day before.
And further on a drain I have had one with my PSs and you really do not know they are there. If you have a catheter in that you will feel when you walk. That will come out generally on the second day if you are still in the hospital.

Hi Krissy ... you're not wearing anyone out ... don't worry. Each surgeon is different with their approach to surgery, some have you on liquids for a week or two prior, some have you do a bowel-prep, some have you lose a certain percentage of your weight prior to performing surgery. Me? I didn't have to do any of that. I was not to eat after 6pm the day prior to surgery, and no aspirin products a week before.
I think most people have a drain, but that again, depends on the doctor. i had a drain after gastric bypass, and they took it out before I went home. It was a little uncomfortable to have it removed, but it wasn't a big deal. Now, the drain with my gallbladder surgery 10 days ago is another story. It seemed "stuck", and I let out blood curdling screams as they tried to pull it out (2 docs, several attempts). But once it was out, no biggie. Actually, recovering from this gallbladder surgery is far worse than my gastric bypass ... or maybe I'm just becoming a wuss.
Anyway, best to you ... hang in there ... let us know how it goes for you, and if there's anything you need, please let us know.
