I had lap RNY because I had bad reflux and a precancerous condition of my esophagus and the doctor felt lap band would continue to allow reflux and RNY pouch would not produce much acid. You loose faster with RNY but it is more involved than the lap band aand not easily reversed. Lap band can be removed. My doctor did not do duodenal switch or the others. I had asthma, newly diagnosed type2 diabetes, BMI of 46 and other health problems. I went through a denial from Aetna and a change of doctors as the Barix clinic closed down after I was scheduled for SX. I think your doctor will discuss the options with you and will help you decide what is best.

Kellie, instead of me writing a book about the different surgery types have you checked out this section of OH? http://www.obesityhelp.com/content/wlsurgery.html This is found on the home page of OH under "Learn" box and then go down to the link for "Weight Loss Surgery" At the time that I had my surgery my option with my doctor was RNY. I opted for open due to the fact that I had prior major abdominal surgeries with a mess of surgical mesh in me. It was the right option for me. When you find a doctor that you want to go to you will sit down with s/he and will make the decision as to what is right for you whether that is lap band, RNY DS or another. I am happy I went with RNY, there are others that have DS or the band and they swear by it. You and your doctor in the end will make what is right for YOU and YOU alone. Chris

When I had my first consultation with my surgeon (Dr. Brian Lahmann) I had wanted the lap band. However when he told me around the normal amount of weight I would lose with it I said forget the band. I know the risks involved, but the weight loss is greater with the Gastric Bypass, and I have quite a bit to lose. My BMI is 49, I have moderate to severe sleep apnea, and I was on blood presure medication. My surgeon has an information night every Weds. night at 6 pm, in which they go over the surgeries, and their risks and benefits. Both surgeries have their pluses, and they both can have complications. If you look up the surgeons on here and click on their name it tells you all about the surgeon and the surgeries they do etc. The surgeon told me the decision was mine, but he thought the Gastric bypass would give me the best results. My sister in law had the procedure done and she has lost a lot of weight and looks great. She also used the same surgeon (s) as Dr. Lahmann is also in with Dr Christopher Joyce.
