what was your last big meal before surgery?...........
Actually, many people think that having WLS is a punishment to not being able to eat their favorite foods anymore and this is not true. Just remember there aren't any bad foods just bad quantities. I do watch my fat, carb and sugar content of my foods. I treat myself every once in a while, just like people that have never had a weight problem do. If you approach having WLS as thinking that you will never be able to have some foods again then try to rethink it as far as how you are going to change your life style PO. WLS surgery is all about a life style change, not a punishment or not being able to have something you love to eat PO.
There is no simple farewell to old habits. The doctor does surgery on your stomach not your brain. You have to do the brain change and it may take you for the rest of your life to implement a change. Remember it usually takes at least 21 days to institute a change in one's life for most simple things but this is not a simple thing. A person sometimes has a life time of bad eating habits to change and if you approach it as taking it one day at a time to relearn or learn anew then you can be a success. A lot of this learning comes from being here in support on the boards and going to your local support group for your doctor. For me OH and my doctor's support group are invaluable tools that I hold tightly in my hand.
I hope that this is not jibberish to you and that you can grasp some of it. Good luck on your journey.

Hi Kellie,
My last meal was dinner at Gibsons, steak, shrimp, several martini's and when I walked out, I could barely walk I was so stuffed. I remember thinking to myself that I would never eat, nor feel like this again and I was happy about that. I did fall into a bit of what I called my "farewell to food tour" along with a desire to drink many different drinks because I would not be drinking alcohol. This is where my mind was playing games with me as I had more drinks in the month prior to surgery than I had in over two years prior to surgery.
Don't think of this as I will never be able to.... or to do...., think of it as an improved eating plan.
Good Luck!

Went to Crackle Barrel,,with friends and family....couldnt eat much....and really didnt want to...I guess I was trying to train my brain into thinking this is what you have to do....to obtain your weight.....Your right about trying to think you cant eat your fav food after WLS...you can but with small amounts and watching what you eat...how much....carbs...fat and so forth.....
I eat chinese alot but I know my limits and intake...
Its usually Moo Goo Gai pan....(boiled then satate' chicken, with chinese cabbage, snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, and water chestnuts,....with white sauce (clear)
and I always have to get a go box to take rest home with me....and it last few days for me....
Mine was a nice steak dinner and some rum raisin Hagen Dazs ice cream.
I can definitely emphatize with your feelings at this point. You do feel like you're giving up food forever but it's not true. You will be able to eat afterwards but in smaller amounts. Once in a while, you can have a treat. That's the key, once in a while not every day. It too depends upon what your stomach can handle post-op. Some of us can eat anything and not dump and others can't. I wish I couldn't. It would make the post op life a lot easier.

I took my kids to Pappadeaux and had their blackened mahi mahi with yvette sauce. It was heavenly.....I know that down the road I will be able to eat this again but of course in a smaller portion. After dinner I came to the realization that I will never eat this quantity of food again and I was totally fine with that. We even had dessert!!!! creme brulee, bread pudding and a lovely banana parfait......yummy yummy. I sit here and drink my beef broth and it's nice cause I still don't have the need to eat like before surgery (but I can't wait until next Friday when I get to start on pureed foods....tomatoe soup here I come....minus the grilled cheese of course) Marcy

Hey Kellie ... I actually had a series of "last meals" spanning several months prior to surgery. I had things I thought I'd never have again (crab legs with butter, steak, pasta, cake, etc.), but to my surprise, I'm able to have just about anything I had prior to surgery (well, I don't do the sugar) ... I just can't eat as much, or eat it all in one day!!
It does take a while to get some foods back, I know I was *dying* to have a salad (didn't have one until I was at least 6 mos out) ... I never thought I would have a craving for that!! Your tastes may actually change after surgery as well. I remember I was kind of freaking out because the cucumber salad I loved pre-op had a lot of calories/fat, etc. (I know, REAL stupid to freak out about that) ... so, I found a cucumber salad recipe that I'd thought I'd try, and I actually like it even MORE than I ever liked the other one! So, there are new recipes (I have a great taffy-apple salad I make), and usually a satisfying alternative for almost everything, so try not to sweat it too much. It's only food. (OMG, who said THAT? lol)
It is sometimes difficult, especially at the beginning, when you are mourning your friend, the food (the head hunger sucks), but this is a fresh start to make better decisions, and to be honest, since we can't eat as much, we tend to be a little picky about the quality of what we do eat (well, most of the time any way).
Best to you,
Karyn
