Ok I have a question. I know alot of surgeons put you on a pre-op diet like liquids for 2 weeks pre-op. But If I had had that much willpower and self control I wouldnt be as fat as I am now. That may sound bad but seriously isnt it true. Imsure hope my doctor doesnt rewquire it I dont know if I can stick to it or not.

Different docs have different reasons for doing things the way that they do. I know folks who've had to go on liquids for 2 weeks pre-op ... one reason could be to shrink your liver. If your surgeon is like mine, you'll be on liquids for at least 2 weeks post-op ... though I have seen surgeons start patients post operatively on soft foods (however uncommon). Point is, if he's doing it, there's a reason behind it. If you don't understand the reason, best thing is to ask ask ask ... do your research and find out ... you'll be so much better off for it in the long run. Best wishes, Cathy

Hi Sandra - Trust me... if you want something bad enough, you can do it for a short time. I was on a liquid diet for 10days prior to my surgery and 2weeks after. The reason most want the liquid diet prior to is to shrink your liver and other organs. You are going to have to learn to self control if you want to be successful after surgery. The wls is not a fix to all of our problems. You still have to do your part in order for it to work. Good Luck, Christina

Sandra, it is not done as a matter of seeing if the person has the will power to stay on it; it is for medical reasons. The doctor knows that you need intervention with surgery. The individual shows symptoms of having a fatty liver and the doctor needs to have it shrunk. It needs to be shrunk especially if s/he is doing the surgery laproscopically because the liver is in the way of getting to the stomach. You do not need your liver nicked by the instruments because you can bleed and it can be dangerous. Ask your doctor if you may need to be on a liquid diet for the 2 week period so you can start mentally preparing yourself. And just keep this in mind also - when you get to that point just before surgery you will DO JUST ABOUT anything to have your surgery. You will wonder what all of the fuss was before hand. Most doctors will put you on a liquid diet the day or two before in addition to the royal flush of your bowels so keep that in mind. You are letting things build fears in your head, try not to think about it, just picture yourself as a PO and the wonderful new life you are going to start encountering. Christine

I totally understand WHY some docs do it it just seems really hard to do when I have no willpower to begin with. thats one of my main weight issues. I just cant say no. If for some reason he tells me not to eat im going to do it because I really want to suceede but its not going to be easy thats for sure.

Sandra, if I can do it, anyone can..lol I was on it for 2 weeks, and my doc's explained it like this. It helps shrink the liver cause they have to lift it up in order to do the surgery. They also want to make sure there is no food in your system, cause then they will just have to close you right back up, and it becomes dangerous for you and them. I was actually surprised, by the 2nd day on a liquid diet, I didn't get hungry. It also depends on your doc. I was only able to drink optifast, which made me sick, so they switched me to slim fast high protein, and water and sugar free jello. Some people get to have broth.

don't worry Sandra... Dr. Vitello does NOT require a pre-op diet~ he'll just tell you if you're going to eat something the day before surgery to eat something light...and if you want to eat something bad for you then do it at least 2 days before surgery!~ Ck~
