A family member had the surgery about 10 weeks ago. I picked up the cost. I am discouraged watching this person because they are already eating high calorie food (fries, bread/butterSteaks,liquor,etc), and little or no exercise. They started well but started in old habits after 4 weeks. The person has yet have the band tightened, and she believes that will cure all. I am starting to hear the old excuses from the old diets...I will start next week ,this weekend is bad, etc...etc. Some questions. -What is an Average weight loss in the weeks (8-12) post lapband on someone 225-260 pounds?? -Is it possible to dislodge the band before it is tighten? I watched this individual eat a sizable piece of bread and meat in a few seconds. I thought the band., even uninflated, would restrict this? -What is the recommended week to get the band tightened for the first time? -From research, in what weeks is the most weight lost? Any help is appreciatted, I am feeling suckered again!

I haven't had my lap band surgery yet but my physician does the first fill at 6 weeks post op and if a second fill is necessary then he does that at 8 weeks. But do keep in mind your friend will be able to eat less after the fills are done but she will still be able to absorb all the calories. Liquids go right through so if she's into drinking high cal drinks and foods like ice cream and frzen yogurts then the band will do her no good. It is possible to "eat around the band". In other words she needs to do the work for the band to ultimately work or she'll have done it for nothing. I've worked as a bariatric nurse for 2 years and have seen this happen. Your a good friend to be so supportive. Pray things will go well with your friend.

Wow.. I wish I could give you answers but I do not know much about lap. I had open RNY. Try to encourage her to get to some support meetings or OH has a lap bad forum that she can ask questions and get support. Sounds like she needs to start over and get the basics mastered. I'm nine months out and still do not eat bread. But that is a personal choice that I have made. Liquor is a big no, no this early out. Most surgeons ask that you wait at least a year and some prefer you don't drink it at all. It's full of sugar and calories. Maybe you two can start a workout plan together?? Hang in there. Christina

I had RNY, not the band, so I can only speak on my behalf. That is exactly one of the reasons I did not want the lap band. I knew I would out-eat it. This person is not learning how to eat. I am not anti-lap band, but just knew it was not a choice for ME. I do know several people who have had to have their band removed (for various reasons), someone who is afraid to get fills because she's afraid of needles, and then some who are very successful (one good friend lost 175 pounds with the band). It sounds to me like this person was not psychologically ready for this surgery. She needs to get to a nutritionist and therapist, as well as support group meetings. It has been proven that most successful weight loss surgery post-ops do attend support group meetings. I commend you for trying to help someone, there are SO many people out there without the means to have this life-saving surgery ... its unfortunate this person seems to not appreciate this gift of yours.
