I have not had my surgery but I am preparing. How long should I be out. I want to be realistic and I do have the choice of having as much time off as I need. I want to be able to get a replacement but I need a time frame.

I haven't had my surgery yet either. My physician said he would let me go back to work in a week and a half but that I would have a 20lb lifting restricion for 8 weeks. The hospital I work at won't let me come back with any restrictions so I'm planning on taking off 8 weeks.

You will just have to listen to your body. I had open RNY and was back to work at 1 1/2weeks w/ a 20lb restriction. The first week went well until that Friday and then it all caught up w/ me and I cam home and slept form 17hrs. I was really tired. I had told my employer three weeks and he said he was counting on me being out 4 -5 weeks. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Christina

Hi Virginia ... I originally saved my PTO to take 2 weeks off after surgery. IWell, I found out that for surgery I can use my short term disability (at 100% pay), so I took all they were willing to give me! (6 weeks). To be honest, I would take as much time as you can. You will feel ok, BUT there are several things to consider. While you may have bursts of energy, you will tire quickly too. You also want to be able to try foods at home, and get used to your new "schedule" before you are thrown into a public setting. Just my 2 cents. Best to you! Karyn
