Giving things up
Hi Monica -
I gave up soda and coffee 4mo prior to surgery. Started drinking coffee again post op as soon as I got the green light. I'm guessing it was about 3mo out. Remember, all surgeons are different with their guidelines. I chew gum a lot. I've noticed that I chew it a lot more post op. I don't know if it's a mental thing that I have to have something in my mouth and chewing or what but it works for me.

Monica, you will have to check with the Kane Group office on the soda and gum. When Dave had his surgery their protocol was soda again but after three months out. I am not sure on gum as he does not chew it.
Actually, I have found that it was not all that hard to give up soda. I do chew gum and like Christina I seem to chew more so now as a PO. You can set your mind to just about anything you want to do. Dave was a large, large diet Pepsi Free drinker and he gave it up (his choice). For some people and myself included you need to do things gradually. Going cold turkey may back fire, but each person is different. We can all give you suggestions but in the long run you have to do what is right for you.

Monica,
You will have to see what your doc says. I was a BIG soda drinker before surgery, about 2 weeks before, I tried to quit drinking it. When after surgery I could have it, I found out I can't stand soda now. I chew gum everyday, and yes, I have accidently swallowed a piece, scared me half to death, but I am still here

Thanks all. I will probably give up soda anyway, it's bad for you! lol I'm so glad that gum chewing sounds like it's still allowed post op. I need to start writing this stuff down to talk to Dr Rantis about. I really appreciate everyone sharing their stories though I know that every case and Dr is different.
Have a happy day!
I was a big (no pun intended) soda drinker pre-op. Now...I can't stand it. It feels like my tummy is going to explode from the carbonation. NOT a good feeling.
Think of the money you'll save (or will have to spend on CLOTHES!!!)
Gum...I chew it once in a while. My doc never forbid it. I'm sure my stoma is a LOT bigger than a piece of gum, after 5 years. LOL
