As far as I know, Lap Band is not an outpatient thing. My surgeon says that actual surgery time for lap band is about 1 hour, while RNY is 1.5 hrs. Most Lap Banders spend one night in the hospital, while RNY can be 1 to 2 nights usually, depending on lots of things.......

Each surgeon has a different protocol, assuredly there will be pre-surgical tests and as soon as your doc is satisfied you are healthy enough for surgery, it will be scheduled.  The tests are as varied as the surgeons so I can't say what you will or won't have.  They are usually pretty standard and non-invasive.  As for diet, that too depends on your surgeon's protocol.  Expect at least overnight, like Dawn said, they have to be sure all the plumbing is working and that you can tolerate liquids at least.  Look at it as an adventure-you just have to wait to turn a new corner to see where it's leading!  THE LOSER"S BENCH!!!!  Good Luck-Janet K

It all depends on what time of the day your surgery is. If you are real early in the morning you might go home later in the afternoon or evening. My surgeon sometimes discharges a lapband patient the same day or if the surgery ends up closer to the afternoon then they stay overnight and go home the next day.  Your doctor's office will be able to answer your questions about the testing and diet. Each doctor has their own protocols on these. Christine

Day One Health which is located downtown Chicago releases patients the same day. While on my journey I was torn between the Lapband and RNY.  I did a bit of research on them and was scheduled for an orientation. I got a call from University of Chicago the same day and decided to go there and have RNY. You can google them and receive more information. Good Luck, Jazzi

Since 2/12/08. I have went from 364 to 210. Thank You RNY!

Thank you for all your responses !!!  I am so much more excited every time Im on this board, now that I AM having the surgery !   Please keep the info coming ! My only concern ( even after I've had a half dozen surgeries, lol + 4 c-sections) is going under the anesthesia..  I've had no problems before, but now that I have 4 daughters and this surgery isn't really a " necessity" that something might happen and I might not wake up or something...errrrr Like , If I could stick to a diet, then I wouldn't be doing this...but now, at this point in my life, I have to diet for a year just to lose ten pounds, my metabolism is SO  shot and I no longer have the strength to go on like that after 30 years of dieting...ya' know.....grrrr I know what I have to do is look at this surgery as "If I don't have it, I will die" and then I will know in my mind it's a must.  I also know these are probably normal feelings and the more I educate myself, the less nervous I will be.....
