Hi,

I met some of you at the support group on Saturday.  Just thought I would ask my question here before I go to the main board.

can I eat penne pasta or will it effect me poorly?  I know I have to try alot of this stuff to see how it turns out, but I found out sat that it would be in my best interest to stay away from rice.

If  penne pasta is ok does any one have a good recipe to go with it.

thanks for your help

Most of us don't eat pasta. I have a lap band and I was told to not even try it till 6 months. I still don't eat it after a year. Most of my RNY friends don't eat it either. I certainly wouldn't make it a whole meal. You could maybe try a piece or two, but be careful. Also, it will take up room you need for protein.

HI Shane,

Just wanted to say WELCOME TO THE ILLINOIS BOARD!  Glad to see you here!  Keep on coming everyday and checking in and letting us know how you are doing.

I am the same amount of days out as you, but I too was told to stay away from pasta as a meal because of the carbs, which equals sugar, which equals possible dumping.  Plus what Connie said about taking up space that could go to protein.  There could also be a problem with it getting stuck, so if you do try a few pieces as a side dish, chew, chew, chew.

Glad to see you came to join us, come often!

Again.....WELCOME!!

Not often but occasionally we will have whole wheat penne pasta.  It does fill me up very quickly.
Welcome to the IL board.

Hi, Shane. I did not have a RNY, so I don't know the rules there. However, I eat and enjoy a newer kind of pasta that is low-carb and yummy. It's called Dreamfields. Most of the major grocery chains carry it and it is in a black box.

If you check out their web site or read the box, it will tell you why their pasta is low-carb (something to do with their patented blah formula blah blah that keeps most of the carbs undigestible, so that you poop it out, without absorbing the sugars). You'd think it would taste yucky, but it's good. I find that it takes a couple additional minutes to cook.

You can use it just as you use any other pasta--lasagna, penne with sausage, whatever.

Some people eat it, fills them up fast.  I am over 2 years out, and still can't eat it.

Hi and welcome, I am 1 yrs out and I can't eat pasta either, which does not bother me as I was not a big pasta eater anyway,  but like every ones else said just chew chew chew and only a few bits as it take up too much space,

Success begins with wise choices I make,I will not let noncompliance be my mistake, The surgery I had was to assist me in changes. My compliance is for a success long range, So I will think before I decide to cheat. Remember the goals I want to meet. For this surgery is not something I was force to do It was what I wanted for a healthy life!

Hey Shane!!

Glad you came over here! Listen, a lot of people are going to tell you dont eat this or sure you can eat this. You wont know unless you try it. Having a RNY doesn't mean you can never eat the foods you liked before surgery. Eat small portions and dont eat pasta all the time. I have eaten pasta a few times, very small amounts, and I have never gotten sick. I have had penne pasta (less than 2 oz) tortilini (sp) and rigatoni pasta. I have made them all with a light res sauce. Pasta for me never gave me a problem. Just stay away from the cream sauces, becuase we all know where those cream suaces end up...in our asses!   For me, I started trying new foods right around 3-4 months out. A little taste at first and chew chew chew. Beofre you know it you will have tried many new foods. Some may agree with you and others may not. Everyone is different.

Good luck with the pasta Shane and keep us posted! Look forward to talking to you and maybe we'll see you again at a meeting!

Take care!
Jill  (I'm the one who ate a piece of halloween candy!) HA!
