Fatty Liver Disease??? Can you still have surgery?

I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease a few years ago. I haven't lost any weight, so I know I still have it. I haven't had an ultrasound from the WLS surgeon, that's on the 18th. I'm worried that it going to be an issue and they wont let me have the surgery. Any one else have FLD? Was surgery still allowed? I'm having surgery on Feb 27Th. Any input would be appreciated.

I'm no expert. I can only tell you my story and what my doc said.

Oh, I had a fatty liver. Lots of obese people do, particularly those with metabolic issues who carry a lot of fat around their midsection. Since there are usually no big symptoms, most of us, including me, walk around undiagnosed.

Some surgeons require their bariatric patients to go on a liquid diet for a period of time to lose weight/"shrink" their liver so they can more easily do their surgery. My surgeon does not require this, because he says "if you could lose weight, you wouldn't need weight loss surgery," so I didn't have to do anything special. He went in via lap, did the DS surgery, and home I went.

Just a few months after my DS (after 3 months and almost 70 pounds gone), my liver enzyme tests started coming back almost normal. Wahoo!

So, this may not be the issue you think it is. In fact, losing the weight can kick your fatty liver's butt to the curb.

Did you tell your surgeon about this up front?  They will be the one to decide risk factors.  My husband has a fatty liver along with other issues with his liver.  He had to have lap band instead of the gatric bypass that he had originally planned to have because they were concerned it would be too hard on his liver.  Keep in mind, he does have other liver problems.

Your surgeon needs to know so there are no surprises once they start the surgery.
