I'm new here
Hey everyone!
I've been debating having weight loss surgery for some time now, but I'm ready to move forward to get the help I need.
My weight has been steadily increasing in the last few years. After graduating high school, I was in the 160 range and now 7 years later I'm pushing 260. I'm 5'4" and from the calculator I've used, my BMI is 44.6.
As for health problems, I have blood pressure that acts like a rollercoaster, arthritis in my knees, and a herniated disk in my back.
I've tried the diets. Nothing has worked. I've done low carb, Weigh****chers, South Beach, etc. I've also just tried counting my calories and reducing my daily intake.
I'm as active as I can be with my knees and my back. It is kind of a catch 22 I guess you could say. I try to exercise to get the weight off so my knees and back won't hurt so bad, but I can't really exercise because my knees and my back hurt so bad!
I've got documentation with my doctor of seeing a dietitian and the pain meds I have to be on daily for the pain.
I'm going to contact the bariatric surgeon that is located in my town in the next few days.
What do you think my chances are? I'm ready to dive head first and get my life back!

Hi there! I'm pretty new here, too. I'm waiting to hear from my insurance - denied or approved.
Not having gone through the surgery and the life after, I do have to say that everything I've heard on here and from others in my life that have had weight loss surgery, is that it is worth it. Jump through any insurance hoops and just keep going.
Do you know which type of surgery you would like or which one your insurance approves of? Check out the different message boards to ask questions about the specific surgeries. Just do your research.
Good luck! A lot of people are on the IL board early in the morning. I'm sure you'll have more responses tomorrow. Keep checking in with us!

Good morning!
Welcome! I am glad you have joined us. You are at the junction of the most exciting ride of your life!
I think your chances sound excellent. As someone with severe knee arthritis and on daily pain meds, I can relate. In fact, I just had a total knee replacement and am waiting to get the other knee done.
The surgery is very helpful but is just a tool. As you lose weight you should be able to exercise more. The more you exercise, the better the weight loss. Unfortunately, I have been unable to exercise so my weight loss has been slower. But I will say, it is the best decision I have ever made!

Hi, welcome to the Illinois board!
I'm a pre-op and joined the board a few months ago. I can't tell you how much I've learned from these folks and how much support they have already given me. It sounds like you have thought through your decision and are ready to take the steps required to get your life back. It can be a long and frustrating process (6 months for me) but keep the end result in mind and come here to vent or ask for advice.
Please join us on the daily roll call when you can, so we can get to know you.
