Has anyone had RNY to DS revision with Dr. John C. Alverdy?
Not too many DSers on the Illinois board...you may want to post this on the DS board or the revisions board.
It IS a highly complex surgery to revise from a RNY to a DS. Not just any yokel can do it.
First, there could be lots of adhesions/scar tissue in your abdomen from any previous surgeries you have had. Then the surgeon has to repair your "pouch" and make it into a functioning stomach again. Hopefully, your pyloric valve has not atrophied and can be revived to be useful again. Your blind stomach could be overgrown with bacteria, since it has just been sitting there, unused. Then there's the intestinal portion of the surgery.
In my non-medical opinion, there are about 3 good revision surgeons out there:
Dr. Rabkin (San Fran, my personal favorite)
Dr. Greenbaum (New Jersey, Rabkin trained)
Dr. Keshishian (California)
Some say Dr. Husted but I wouldn't go there. That's just me.
If you'd like to meet Rabkin and sit in on his info session (and ask him your personal questions), he's coming to our Nov 16 support group meeting in Chicago. He won't be abck again until after the new year. PM me for more info.
I think Vicki in a Clamshell has a list of DS surgeons who do revisions on her blog. You may want to check it out.
I have not heard whether the U of C guys are doing many revisions these days. I'm sure it's on a case-by-case basis. It will be interesting to hear your experience.

Best of luck!
