I have a surgery date!
Yay! Congrats! I had my surgery at Alexian Brothers (and I work for their health system). So just some things to keep in mind...
1. The best thing about the facility is that you will get a private room.
2. The bad thing about the private room is that they combined the bariatric floor with the orthopedic floor.
These two together mean that you will not necessarily get nurses who have a clue on what bariatric patients need to do. They did not ask me to get out of bed the first day. In fact I asked them to get out of bed and walk around the following day.
3. The floor layout is really bad for nurses and it is difficult to get to all of your patients. This part is super important.... If they do not answer your call button, call the charge nurse or the nurse that is assigned to you.
I called them every time it took them more than 10 minutes to get back to me, I was a pain in their ass, and I demanded that I be taken care of. I know it was hard on the nurses but I needed it so I demanded it.
Other than all of that, the nurses are so nice even when you are pushy the floor that they put you on is really big and great for doing laps.
Oh! one last thing... CONGRATS! :)

Hi Sue,
That's GREAT news! I'm so happy for you. Nov. 30th will come up fast!
I'll add my 2 cents to Crystal's info: if the nurses don't give you an incentive spirometer and teach you how to use it, ASK for one. It's a little contraption that helps you breathe really deeply, helps your lungs recover from surgery and prevents pneumonia. That and the walking are the best ways you can help your recovery.
Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing during the next few weeks!
