Monday Morning Roll Call

Good Evening Carol and Illinois Board

Well, I made it through my first full day back at work!  It wasn't too bad.  We were extremely busy, so the day went fast.

I am still on the warpath with Dish TV.  They supposedly overnighted me a DVR on Friday but the tracking number they sent me today shows it did not go out until 5:30 this evening!  I did call Lisa Madigan's office this morning and they told me to send in the complaint form and they would take care of it.  Go Lisa go!  At this rate, I may have TV again by February.  I am not holding my breath.

Carol, you have an ambitious workout schedule!  More power to you!  Your days sound incredibly busy so I can imagine it being hard to get it all in.

Lisa, I hope you are awake when they start up construction in the mornings.  Otherwise, that would be a rude wake up call!

Hope everyone has a great week!

Wow. How do folks find time to exercise? I basically do none. I walk to and from the commuter train at the moment, a total of 30 minutes (RT) per day (M-F). Because I've read that it's almost guaranteed that RNYers are going to gain back almost half their excess weight lost after 5 years, I am realizing that I'm going to have to put up a huge exercise effort to attempt to buck that trend. (Tell me NOW if I should just give up hope on that ultimate goal of "losing all the excess weight and keeping it of forevah!" I like to be realistic.)

I'm thinking my best bet will be to start exercising every day in the morning at home. Of course, that means getting out of bed with time to spare. And then exercising.

I'm now too busy at work to take a lunch-hour, although I might have to force myself to start taking a brisk one-hour lunchtime walk each work day (that'd be continuous walking, not in little spurts like the jaunt to train/work). And then, work later for an hour an take the later train home. And then do this walking or some kind of workout at home on the weekends, too.

Groan.

What would you recommend for a fulltime worker with an 11yo special needs kid and a hubby (whom we hope will one day be a fulltime worker again) and a house? That pretty much is what I spend my time on. I just can't figure out how people do it. Where do they add exercise, which seems to take at least an hour if you're doing it right, plus time to suit-up and cool down???

My "Sedentary" Day...

6:50 a.m.: Up (flouting alarm variously set for 6 a.m. or 6:30 a.m.)
7: start breakfast, coffee, & lunch prep
7:20: tend to child a bit
7:30: shower
7:45: dress
8: make up, shoes, coat
8:15: out the door (get a ride to the train) [truth: I could walk it (15 min), but would have to get up earlier]
8:45-9: brisk walk to work
> work from 9 through 4 p.m. (non-stop. snacks & lunch at desk)
4 p.m.: brisk walk to train
5: get a ride home from train [truth: I could walk it (15 min), but it's dark and dicey except in summer]
by 6: [completely exhusted!!!] eat dinner, watch a movie or go online [BAD habit], or read - should play with child
9:30: prep for bed
10 (INTENDED) time for bed
~ midnight: actual usual bedtime [BAD habit]

And, weekends? ! Even more sedentary.

Whaaa! How am I going to change??? Change for a (remaining) lifetime???

I find that the ONLY time I have for exercise is to get up earlier in the morning and do it then.  I used to get up at 4 to do this, but my work hours are now later so I could move it to 5.  Once you get used to it, it is really not so bad, then it is done for the day.  That and your walking will take care of it!

@berts4 ~ How do you front-load your a.m. excercise? Do you jump out of bed and go at it? I'm  thinking I should start sleeping in a workout T-shirt and shorts... ;)

Well...."jump" might not be the right word, but basically, yes.....I just MAKE myself get up and grab a bottle of water, then jump on the exercise bike.  Some days are harder than others, but I feel better when I do it and as I said, the habit becomes easier.

This sounds do-able. A librarian friend suggested I listen to a book on tape ONLY when I'm riding the exercise bike. That way, I can't hear the rest of the story UNTIL I get back on it (the next day)! What'd you think? That might work well, eh? :)

That sounds like a GREAT idea!!!!
I listen to books on CD in the car since I have a 35-40 minute drive each way, but I could hear MORE books if I listenened while riding!
Thanks!

Hi, I am not sure where you have read this - both my husband and I are close to 7 years out (RNY) and we have not gained any weight back. Think about this - Insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid WOULD not pay for the surgery if people gained their weight back.

Yes, it going to be an effort (better term is making life style changes) and relearning to eat properly, realizing when you are eating due to stress and how to channel that differently and incorporating excersie into your new life. It does not happen overnight but is learned. This is a more realistic approach. I look forward to hearing more about your journey and the WOS moments in the future.

Hi, ChristineB: The surgeon, Nagle, presented this data on a slide. Then another OH member mentioned that her/his surgeon (in Canada) also presented the same info about c55% EWL with regain after five years. So, this is what the docs are putting out there in their introductory seminars to those interested in RNY. I'm thinking that maybe the weight-over-time trend must include "old" (from when they started RNYs) proceedures and patients who never had the benefit of modern pre- & post-surg programs (much less, the internet!). --- What I'm grateful for are OH folks who are living-proof that aiming for goal-weight is reasonable and possible!
