The other day at work, (I work in a large hospital that is also affiliated with a medical school) I was assigned to the ICU unit, and was talking with one of the surgical residents. I asked her what her opinion of the by pass surgery was. At first she was somewhat reluctant to answer and wanted to know exactly what it is i wanted to know about. I said, well, give my your professionial and your personal opinion. Well, professionally speaking she said it is good for anyone with alot of co-morbities, but there can be complications..... and on she went. Then on to her personal thoughts..... just do the south beach diet, can loose lots of weight with that. Oh and the biggest joke... she said just follow the bariatric after surgury diet and you'll lose weight. Well no kidding. But then who can eat like that before surgury i thought. If we could, we wouldnt go through having our inards rerouted. Duh. Needless to say, i don't want her particiapating in my surgery Kristi

My brother is a surgeon and I of course am always calling him although he doesnt do bariatrics... He was all for it and recommended it. now my mom is a South beach diet nut case and would have loved her opinion since my mom told me the same thing that surgeon told you.. (mom is a retired surgical nurse)

Honestly, the thin people in life have no clue. I work with girl who is a size 2, eats candy all day long and then goes home and works out for 2 hours six days a week. She had the same opinion, follow the after diet and you will be fine. I told her she was clueless, she should try following that diet and then let me know if it is something that the "average" person could follow without having the surgery. Why don't people get it? Sorry, stepping off of my soapbox. . .

I too work for an extreamly large hospital and also affiliated with a school and I asked a couple of co workers the same question and the answers I got were unbelievable. You can tell these people have never had a weight problem. One of them said, if obese people would just push away from the table and have a little will power they wouldn't have to worry about surgery! Can you believe that. It just amazes me how ignorant people can be about obesity. I wouldn't want any of my co-workers participating in mine either. After their comments, I will not tell them I am going to have the surgery. I am going to take vacation and leave it at that. Shelley
