Mercy Bariatric Center-Harvard IL??
Hi Sue, my friends and I (6 of us) have all had Dr. LaDonna Bryan at Harvard. All I can say is I would highly recommend them. Her staff is very informative, they never make you feel like you are a pain (even if you ask a million questions), contrary to the other poster, I think their follow up has been wonderful. They have an awesome support group that meets the first tuesday of every month & are never more than a phone call away with no wait for a call back. I have other friends who have gone to Barrix (4 of them) and had a series of problems, whi*****luded poor instruction and zero followup on nutrition (my cousin was the worst, ended up with malnutrition and vit. defiencency). I would never go by what any one single person says though. You need to go to an informational meeting at both places and decide for yourself. All I can say is I went to the meeting at Barrix and was not Impressed, when I went to the meeting at Harvard, Dr. Bryan herself presented it and made you feel completely welcome and wanted every question you would ask, no hiding anything. My mother was dead set against it until we went to the meeting there and she met Dr. Bryan and asked her some pretty demanding questions, now my mother is her biggest fan. I am going to be 9 weeks PO on wednesday and am down 62 pounds. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I live in Rockford by the way. Bobbi ~SassyLu~
Bobbi,
I'm getting the feeling you took my post personally, and I hope that's not the case. You've made an extremely valid point, and that is that you can't go by something one person says. I have no idea how the surgeon is at Harvard, as I said, all I had heard about was the follow up care, and this was from two patients from Harvard who attended a support group meeting in Rockford. If you're happy with them, that's wonderful, just as I'm happy with Barix, and the care and support I got there. Please don't feel that my post was an attack on Harvard or Dr. Bryan, just an observation on some people I'd met who had surgery there.
Please ask your friends who had surgery at Barix to attend the support group meetings held the second Monday of every month. They are run by two of the bariatric nurses and many of us attend regularly. I KNOW the nurses and Dr. Boe and Dr. Vaughn would want to know immediately about the poor instruction and follow up. They just got a new nutritionist, so I'm not sure if that contributed to the problem, but it's something they would want to address. Please feel free to email me, or to have your Barix friends email me. It would be nice to see them at the support group meetings.

Hi Terry, No I don't take posts personally. I just wanted Sue to understand that checking for yourself is ALWAYS the best idea!! I appreciate your honesty and all. I will definately tell the girls at work about the meetings, they are both almost 5 years out from (these are the two who were the worst cases). Was that even called Barrix then? I am going to call them tonight and see, I just know it was there in that building in Belvidere. I am sure the fact that they have a new nut. is helpful too! I am glad that you have had a super expierence there, as I was wondering about that place after what I had previously seen. It is refreshing to hear positive stories. Thanks again, and there was absolutely no offense taken at all, sorry if I jumped outta my skin on that one! LOL. I hope we together have prompted Sue to check all of her options before chosing though, I guess what I am trying to say is that it really comes down to who you feel comfortable with. Thanks for the good info, I will pass all of it on. BobbiLynn
BobbiLynn,
As a matter of fact, Barix used to be Bariatric Treatment Center, same place, different name, different doctors. Dr. Boe has been there about 3 years, and Dr. Vaughn abour a year and a half. Tell them we would really like to see them at the meetings, it's nice to talk to people who are that far post op.
