CIB vs. Protein Shake
I loved the nsa Carnation Instant breakfast and used it only as a "topper" for days when I needed that bit of protein in.
I think it only worked out to around 11 grams of proteins for a glass. That's not a ton of protein for the calorie/carb count. When drinking and eating is such a chore, that's way too many glasses I'd have to drink per day and the carb count and calorie count would be quite high.
It's better to find a more reasonable shake with around 150 calories, 2 grams of carbs or less and 25 grams of protein.

I think you will need a high protein amount than comes in the breakfasts. Thr protein shake I am taking is 30g of Whey Isolate Protein. The brand is BioX and I bought it at GNC but I think Popeye's carries it also. I really like this one and took it about a month pre-surgery also as a meal replacement to help me lose before hand (also cut out sugar before hand).
For some.. like those that get surgery in Hamilton. They're told to use Carnation Breakfast or Boost Diabetic for two weeks. I'm not sure if it's 3 shakes or 4 a day though. Maybe someone that's had surgeyr there can chime in.
Carnation Instant Breakfast would be used like a meal replacement much like Optifast. If you are required to do it for two weeks then do it how your doctor says.. otherwise use it for meals. If you've just had surgery it may be good to have at least 2 or 3 a day so you know you get your vitamins and minerals and some proteins. You may need to put a scoop or two of Resource Beneprotein (it's tasteless and can be added to almost any food or drink) to boost up the protein content or take something else to boost it up.
I've barely been using protein shakes. I have a Boost Diabetic in the morning and use food (since I'm a month out) for my protein.
Good Luck! Hope that helps!
Surgery isn't until Oct. 1, so am just trying to stock a bit of everything....haven't bought any whey protein yet, so may visit gnc, thanks....my pre op is Sept. 21, so that only gives me 9 days to follow any instructions....I understood from Dr. P., at the consult waaaayyyyyy back in April that we're to lose 10 lb. before surgery, so think that I'll focus on that, and, yes...lo carb has always worked for me....if I have to, I'll go to liquids the nine days before....[I think?] THANKYOU to all for help and interest....

LOL I stocked up on SOOOO much before surgery. Way more than I ended up needing lol I bought a case of Beneprotein (only used a can so far but I'm sure I'll use the rest eventually) and 4 cases of Boost Diabetic.. still have a case of Optifast too. I bought about 20 Campbells pre made soups that come in the boxes lol I think I used 5 before I got sick of them lol
Still working on all the popsicles and freezies I bought before surgery too.. but my daughter is helping with those lol
Keep things in perspective.. when they say you can only have a few oz at a time.. they mean it.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the heads up....so far I've purchased a mini blender, a mini chopper[electric], measuring cups and spoons, [not a baker, didn't have any], very small storage containers,a digital kitchen scale, and two travel cups with measurements on them...no food except for the TEN boxes of carnation my Fla. friend is getting for me...Was there anything you didn't have that you wished you did? And could someone please list what I should have in the cupboard for post surgery....Thanks....again and again

You know what I found helpful the first couple of weeks? Baby spoons. I couldn't take too big of a bite that way.
