intubating question
Its not the surgeon usually who decides that but the anaestheiologist - at least it was in my case - I didn't need to be tubed while awake but it was something that was discussed at my PATTS appt. She wanted to know about my dental work as that is a factor in things as well as your physiology.
Sometimes the best support you can get isn't all purple puddles and pink rainbows.
I had my surgery in a small private hospital in Montreal. The anesthesiologist came to see me and said that because it wasn't a large hospital with all of the fancy equipment that it was safer for him to intubate me while I was awake. I was pretty freaked out when he told me, but he said that I would inhale something to freeze my throat, and I would be given something to help me relax and that I would be very cooperative. He would tell me what to do, I would do it and I wouldn't remember a thing.
He was right. I breathed deeply (through my mouth) some bad tasting stuff and after that I don't remember anything until I woke up in the recovery room.
Tell your friend not to worry. I'm sure she will be fine.
